Vancouver, B.C. (April 7, 2008) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) opened its national qualifying schedule for the Euro Junior Golf Cup this past weekend at University G.C. in Vancouver, B.C. A fantastic performance was turned in by Kevin Lee of Surrey, B.C. who led all competitors with a two round score of 145 (+1) highlighted by an opening round 69 (-3).
Lee, 13, overcame the harsh weather conditions on Sunday in earning his second consecutive CJGA division CJGA title ahead of Kevin Kwon, 12, of Coquitlam, B.C. “I played really well yesterday but struggled today,” admitted Lee. The conditions were much worse today and I had trouble with my driver.” Kwon, a winner at the CJGA season opening event at Northview, finished ten strokes back of Lee while Curtis Chan of Richmond, B.C. and Cameron Davison of Duncan, B.C. tied for third at 158 (+14).
Though her first win did not come easy, Christine Wong managed to pull it off after a playoff decided the Girls Division. Wong posted rounds of 75 and 76 for a 151 (+7) total, matched by Anica Yoo of Port Coquitlam after the two battled back and forth on Sunday. It was Wong who earned the win after an exciting playoff. “It was great to win it in a playoff,” admitted Wong after the round. “I played really consistent this weekend.”
Jay Kim, 15, of Surrey overcame a two-stroke first round deficit in Sunday’s final round to earn his first career CJGA title in the Boys 14 – 16 Division. Kim posted rounds of 75 and 79 for a 154 (+10) total and a three shot victory ahead of first round leader James Fahy of Vancouver, B.C. “I hung in there and kept scrambling today,” said Kim. “I made a lot of good up and downs.”
In the Boys 17 – 19 Division it was a Winnipeg, Man. resident who emerged victorious as Burke Wiebe, 17, closed with back to back birdies on Sunday to pull away from Jimmy Lu of Surrey, B.C. Wiebe posted a final round 76 (+4) for a two-day total of 155 (+11) and a four-shot win. “I played pretty decent today with the exception of one hole,” said Wiebe. “I drove the ball well and putted well. The course was great.”
