Gibson Impressive at Saskatchewan Double Qualifier
Saskatoon, SK (May 5, 2008) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) hosted the Mizuno North America Cup Qualifier and the CJGA Junior Worlds Qualifier at Holiday Park Golf Club this past weekend as it opened its provincial schedule in Saskatchewan. Playing in his hometown, Saskatoon native Jesse Gibson opened the tournament with an eagle on the first hole and never looked back, shooting a tournament low 136 (-8) to capture the Boys 14 – 16 Division title.
Gibson, a member of CJGA Team Canada at the 2007 Mizuno North America Cup, looks intent on re-qualifying for the team after posting an opening round tournament low 65 (-7) and closing with a 71 (-1). “I was consistent the last two days,” said Gibson who finished 11 strokes ahead of Mike Herperger of Humbolt, Sask.. “[My] putting was on,” admitted Gibson, and with two beautiful days of 17 degrees, 10 km/h winds and what he feels were the “best greens in Saskatoon.” The division race for third place was tight as Ryan Hubert from Waka, Sask. and Saskatoon’s Taylor Afseth tied with a score of 152 (+8).
In the Boys 13 & Under Division it was Conley Kriegler from Saskatoon who claimed the title and his first win of the year. Kriegler shot an opening round of 76 (+4) and followed it up with a closing 84 (+12) for a 160 total (+14). “My brother helped me prepare,” said Kriegler. “He gave me valuable instruction that gave me confidence while I was playing.” In the battle for second place, Garret Blair from Lanigan, Sask. came from behind to pick up four strokes on the final four holes to gain a one- stroke lead on third place finisher Ben Sherry from Saskatoon. Lanigan and Sherry shot 16 (+17) and 165 (+18) respectively.
In other divisional races, Saskatoon’s Danielle Pinder shot a 160 (+14) to secure her first victory of the year in the Girls Division ahead of Thea Hedemann and Anna Young, both residents of Saskatoon, who tied for second place with a 168 (+22). Young gained two strokes on the final hole to even the score up.
In the Boy’s 17-19 Division, two year veteran of CJGA Team Canada, Troy Bulmer, showed composure on the last hole as he was down one stroke to Swift Current, Sask. resident Mark Johnston and Saskatoon’s Tanner McGregor. Bulmer managed a par while both his competitors double-bogeyed allowing Bulmer to claim the Division title by a single shot at 149 (+5) while Johnston and McGregor tied for second place at 150 (+6).
