With a new tournament, at a new course, it was only fitting for there to be a first time champion: James Krantz of Oshawa, Ont. won the Boys 17-19 Division after carding a two-day total of 144 (E). On the opening day of the tournament, the weather was cloudy with a light rain. Krantz was not deterred by the less then ideal conditions and shot an opening round 73 (+1), creating a three shot lead over the competition. The second round greeted the players with a beautiful hot and sunny day, and Krantz would not miss the opportunity to win his first event. He shot 71 (-1) extending his lead to ten strokes over second place finisher Scott Simpson of Newmarket, Ont. “I struck the ball very well this weekend,” commented Krantz, “The course is great, the greens roll well and the fairways are nice and lush.” Corey Cucco of Uxbridge, Ont., finished third in the division.
The Boys 14-16 Division proved to be extremely competitive as nine players were within five strokes of the lead. Matthew LaRiviere of Richmond Hill, Ont., fresh off of a win in the Ping Canadian Junior Match Play Championship, would continue to build momentum and shoot 155 (+11) for a one stroke win over Gormley’s Ryan Brown and Newmarket’s Carson Pickford who tied for second place. “I played really well off the tee today,” admitted LaRiviere, “I only missed a few fairways all tournament.”
In the Girls Division, Toronto’s Isabella Leung finished first scoring 181 ( +37), Ju-Hee Bae of Toronto, Ont. and Natalie Chung of Thornhill, Ont. finished in second and third respectively. Tae Won Kim of Richmond Hill, Ont. clinched the Boys 13 and Under Division just after returning from his trip to the Mizuno North America Cup last week. Rob Gavarkovs of Toronto, Ont., and Mississauga’s Paulino Fernando rounded out the top three.
