TEAM ENGLAND, 2008 CIJC Champions
COLLINGWOOD, ON (September 18, 2008) – A sparkling final round team total of 216 (E) earned England its first victory at the Canadian International Junior Challenge after coming from behind to overtake a very game CJGA Team Canada. The English was victorious by four strokes with a team total of 666 (+18).
“The tournament was played in excellent spirit and has been a tremendous success for our side,” said Mike Jones, team manager of England. “The hospitality shown here in Canada has been truly wonderful and I’m sure the English Golf Union will send a team back to defend the title in 2009.” The team, represented by the English Golf Union, included Tom Boys of Neston, Jake Shepherd of London, Max Smith of Newbury, and Adam Myers of Northampton.
CJGA Team Canada led for the first two rounds but couldn’t hold off the English despite turning in a solid team total of 222 (+6) led by Toronto, Ont. resident Richard Jung who narrowly missed out on medalist honours after losing a playoff to Colombia’s Daniel Zuluaga. Jung recorded a three-day total of 224 (+8) including a final round 72 (E) to lead the Canadian side that also included Alex Dumais of Caledon East, Ont., Brent McKenzie of Cambridge, Ont. and Brando n Ng of Toronto.
“It was an awesome event,” admitted Sean Casey, the team manager for CJGA Team Canada. “England just played solid golf today and they should be congratulated. Even par as a team is a great score. We had a chance with a few holes left but it just wasn’t to be. I’m very proud of all the team members.”
Zuluaga parred the first extra hole to earn medalist honours for a Colombian side that finished in third place overall. “I was very calm before the playoff and thought we were going to a second hole,” said Zuluaga through a translator. “This is one of the best tournaments I’ve ever played in outside of Colombia and maybe the greatest golf course. I really enjoyed the hospitality.”
Colombia’s team total of 690 was two better than Brazil while Trinidad & Tobago finished in fifth spot.
