Bogey Free Final Round Propels Ko to Victory at the NIKE Golf Juniors Series at Hazelmere

Surrey, B.C. (March 14, 2011) – The CJGA Junior Tour kicked off its 19th season this past weekend as juniors faced harsh spring conditions at the NIKE Golf Junior Series and Stephen Ames Cup Qualifier at Hazelmere Golf Course in Surrey, BC.  Kevin Ko, of Coquitlam, BC bested the Boys 15-19 division by an amazing 15 shots after posting the only under par final score in the tournament.

Kevin Ko’s final round scorecard consisted of five birdies and no bogies to shoot 67 (-5). “I used my patience and kept the ball in play during the high winds on the first day” said Ko who opened the tournament shooting an even par 72. “With the wind dying down on the back nine (Sunday) I began firing at the flag” added Ko. With a two day total of 139 (-5) Ko can add his first CJGA Junior Tour win to an impressive resume. Finishing in a tie for second place was Tae In Lee of Maple Ridge, BC with a two day score of 154. Lee was the only other junior to shoot a under par round on Sunday carding a 70 (-2). Equally matched in 2nd place was Tom Bang of Coquitlam, BC with rounds of 82 and 72.

The Boys 14 & Under division saw plenty of drama as six juniors jockeyed for the divisional crown. Starting the second round 5 strokes behind, Jordan Lu, of Vancouver, BC came out on top shooting rounds of 79 (+7) and 73 (+1) with a two day total of 152. Lu who putting poorly in the two rounds was happy to have his first career CJGA Junior Tour win. “I felt as though I could have performed better” said Lu. When asked what contributed to the win Lu added “my iron play and approach shots were solid.” Close on the heels of Lu were three players all finishing with a two day score of 154. Alexander Chen, of Richmond, BC, Logan Yanick, of Courtenay, BC, Henry Lee, of Coquitlam, BC.

Alix Kong of West Vancouver, BC improved by 10 shots over her first round to shoot a 74 (+2) on Sunday giving her a two day total of 158, good enough for first place in the girls division. “I’m proud I was able to rebound after a poor front nine on the first day” said an elated Kong. Three strokes behind Kong was Naomi Ko, of Victoria, BC who also improved from a first day score of 86 (+14) to shoot 75 (+3) for a two day total of 161. Finishing in a tie for 3rd were Gloria Usu Choi, of Langley, BC and Annie Songeun Lee, of Surrey, BC both shooting a two day total of 165.
All three division winners will be in the field at Northview Golf Course March 21st and 22nd for the Euro Junior Golf Cup and North American Cup Qualifier.
