Richmond Hill, Ont. (March 23, 2011) – Despite poor weather conditions, juniors from across British Columbia and Alberta posted excellent scores at this week’s Canadian Junior Golf Association’s Euro Junior Golf Cup & North America Cup Qualifier in Surrey, BC. All three divisional champions posted sub-par rounds as juniors were able to tame the Canal Course at Northview Golf & Country Club.

An extra hole was needed to decide the winner in the Girls division as Naomi Ko of Victoria, BC and  Alix Kong of West Vancouver, BC finish 36 holes tied with a score of 141 (-3). The playoff came to a dramatic end on the first playoff hole as Kong chip in for birdie to secure her second consecutive title. “My ball striking was excellent and I was able to make clutch putts when I needed to” said Kong. Despite losing in the playoff Ko still managed to put together two sub-par rounds shooting 71 (-1) and 70 (-2). Just out of reach in third place was Muni He of Pitt Meadows BC who finished the two days under par shooting 72 (E) and 71 (-1).
After the first round, the Boys 14 & Under division looked like it was also going to need a playoff to decide a champion as a pair of sub-par scores lead a jammed leader. Jordan Lu of Vancouver, BC once again managed to muster a comeback after going into the final round 4th on the leader board. Lu, who saw himself in the same position at last week’s event, was able to keep his emotions in check and let his clubs do the work. “I putted really well today” Lu said after posting 5 birdies in his final round to shoot 69 (-3) with a 2 day total of 142 (-2). Four shots back of Lu were a trio of players with a two day score of 146 (+2), Alexander Chen, of Richmond, Henry Lee, of Coquitlam, and Donald Qui, of Surrey.
The Boys 15-19 division saw a familiar face return to the winner’s circle Sunday as Kevin Kwon of Pitt Meadows, BC held off last week's divisional champion Kevin Ko of Coquitlam, BC to win his fifth career CJGA Junior Tour title. “I made a lot of putts today and managed my game pretty well” said Kwon. With six birdies on the last day alone, Kwon posted a final score of 141 (-3). After opening the tournament with a one under par 71, Ko could not keep up with Kwon and finished runner up with a final score of 144 (E). Christian Nowakowski of Victoria, BC finished third with a second round back nine of 35 (-1) to finish with a two day total of 147.
Juniors will now shift their focus to this weekend’s major, the PUMA Challenge at University Golf Club which is a Tier 2 event on the CJGA National Order of Merit.
