Richmond Hill, ON – Each year the Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) recognizes two outstanding junior golfers who have shown a commitment to the game of golf, academics, and community volunteerism. The CJGA is pleased to announce the 2010 recipients of the Mizuno All-Canadian Award, Sydney MacDonald of Calgary, Alberta and Curtis Chan of Richmond, British Columbia.

“Mizuno is very pleased with this year’s selections for the Mizuno All-Canadian Award. Both Curtis and Sydney exemplify all the attributes we value when presenting the Mizuno All-Canadian Award” stated Mark Hansen, Director of Sales and Marketing – Golf Division. “They are outstanding young people who attain both a focus in academics as well as a dedication to community service in their area. Finally, Curtis and Sydney are both fine golfers that had a great year on the CJGA circuit in 2010”.
“I am so honored to be selected as the female Mizuno All-Canadian Award recipient “said MacDonald from her home in Calgary. “To receive a national award that accounts for golf, academics and community is extremely rewarding”.
MacDonald, 17, a Grade 11 student at Central Memorial High School in Calgary, AB currently holds an 89.25% academic average. And with aspirations to continue golf as a possible career, she has not lost focus on the importance of academics and will look to pursue a post-secondary education after completing high school with a passion for sports medicine and math.
A very well-rounded individual, MacDonald excels within her community as well, providing her time to assist those less fortunate. In the last year alone, she has participated in the “Inn from the Cold” program at Oak Park Church of Christ preparing, serving, and sharing meals with the homeless as well as preparing and laundering bedding for those needing a warm place to stay at night. She also participated in a Christmas Shoe Box Drive providing gifts and essentials to underprivileged children around the world during the holidays as well as a charity event – Heart for Home – Mission in Haiti – that raised much needed funds for the people of Haiti after the devastating hurricane.
On the golf course, MacDonald had a successful 2010 campaign collecting two top-three finishes on the CJGA while representing the association at the Junior World Golf Championship in san Diego, CA. She also picked up some provincial hardware as recipient of the Alberta Golf Association 2010 Alberta Junior Achiever Award, 2010 Alberta PGA Junior Masters Champion, 2010 Calgary Ladies Junior Champion and 2010 Earl Grey Junior Girls Champion. Sydney is a proud member of Earl Grey Golf Club in Calgary, Alberta.
“I have such a passion for the game and all the enjoyment it brings me each and every day” she said. “I am driven to continue to work hard to achieve my goals and hope that I can be a role model to encourage more girls to get involved in the game”.
“This is very special to me” said Chan, a 14 year old Richmond, British Columbia native who is just the second junior that age to win the prestigious award (2005 recipient Brittany Henderson was 14 at the time of her award). “Being recognized for not only my golf but my academic accomplishments as well as my work in the community is truly an honor”.
Chan, who posts an 85% academic average in his freshman year at Stevenson-London Secondary School in Richmond, BC is interested in obtaining a golf scholarship when the time comes to pursue both his golf ambitions as well as continue his academic successes. He is a member of the International Issues Club, Student Council, and the schools Spectrum Program which engages a limited number of students to explore enrichment topics and volunteers in various school activities.
“I owe a great deal of this success to my parents as well as my grandmother, all of whom have supported me every step of the way. This award gives me a great sense of accomplishment and I would not have been able to do this without their support and guidance” said Chan.
Leading a busy life thought his school and community work, Chan has found the time to work on his golf game, posting some great results over the past couple of seasons. He has won three divisional title over the past two seasons, along with two runner-up finishes, including one at a winners-only CJGA national event. He captured the British Columbia Juvenile Boys Championship last season along with a top 25 finish at the Canadian Junior Boys Championship (5th place in the Juvenile division). In 2009, Curtis represented the CJGA and Canada extremely well as he captured the US Kids Golf World Championship in Pinehurst, NC as a 12 year old and finished 3rd at the Junior World Golf Championship in San Diego, CA. He was a member of CJGA Team Canada at the Euro Junior Golf Cup in St. Andrews, Scotland in 2008 where he captured all six of his matches.
Curtis is a proud member of Marine Drive Golf Club in Vancouver, BC and is a leader in the Junior Elite program at the club.
Both Sydney and Curtis will be presented with their awards, including a custom set of Mizuno irons and Mizuno golf bag for their achievements. The CJGA would like to thank all those that applied for the presitigious award and would like to congratulate Sydney and Curtis for their outstanding efforts.
