CJGA Wraps Up Optimist Event at Langara GC

Vancouver, B.C. (May 2, 2011) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) concluded the final round of the Optimist International Junior Qualifier yesterday at the Langara Golf Course in Vancouver. Scores from both rounds reflected the great weather that greeted players as many golfers posted impressive scores.  Top juniors from each division earned spots at the Optimist International Junior Championship in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Ally Shin of Coquitlam, B.C. took charge of the girl’s leaderboard Sunday to take home the divisional title. She birdied four of her last seven holes to take a commanding lead and solidify her position on top of the standings. Posting a 74 Sunday, Shin finished with a 150 (+3) total for the two-day event. Keanna Mason of Maple Ridge, B.C. finished second while hometown favourite Rachel Shi of Vancouver ended up third after posting an even-par 35 on the back nine.
In the Boys 10-11 division, Callum Davison of Duncan, B.C. also had a strong finish to claim the championship. He birdied No. 14, 17 and 18 to shoot a 1-under-par 34 on the final nine holes. Vancouver natives Perry Xin and Andrew Spalti finished in second and third place respectively.
Roy Kang of North Vancouver was sitting on top of the field after Sunday’s round in the Boys 12-13 division. He had a two-day 151 (+9) total for the tournament, winning the title by four shots. Diego San Pedro of Richmond, B.C. finished the day in second while Jaewook Lee of Port Moody, B.C. ended the day in third after an eagle on No. 3.
In the Boys 14-15 division, Oscar Baek of Coquitlam, B.C. had two impressive rounds in capturing the title. He shot an even-par 71 Sunday for a 144 (+2) total. Jordan Lu of Vancouver made a late surge up the leaderboard to finish the event in second place. He birdied No. 9, 10, 11 and 16 on route to a final round 68 (-3) for a two day 147 (+5). Jun Kang of Port Moody, B.C. shot 2 under par on the front nine yesterday to finish in third place, five strokes behind Lu.
Cameron made it a clean sweep for the Davison brothers in the Boys 16-18 division, carding a steady 72 (+1) in the final round. He shot 1 under par on the back nine to claim the title by six shots. Jimmy Mir of Vancouver finished in second place while Brady Walsh of Victoria, B.C. finished in third.
