Strong Performances at Alberta’s Canada Cup Qualifier in Carstairs

Carstairs, Alta. (May 9, 2011) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) concluded its second event of the Alberta schedule on Sunday at the par-72 Carstairs Golf Club. The Big Chief Beef Jerky Alberta Junior/Canada Cup Qualifier had over 75 players participating from three divisions. This two-day weekend event was Alberta’s qualifying tournament for the Lipton Brisk Canada Cup happening in July. Based on their performance over the weekend, junior golfers may be invited to represent Alberta and play on Team West at the Canada Cup, which will be taking place in Welland, Ont. at the Lochness Links Golf Club.

In the Boys 14 & Under group, Nolan Mastel of Medicine Hat, Alta. took first place with a two-day score of 6-over-par. He also shot the lowest single-round score of his division with a one-over-par 73. Finishing tied for second were Michael Pruss of Red Deer, Alta. and Ryan Rody of Calgary, who shot an overall score of 156.
 
For the Boys 15-19 division, Riley Fleming of Airdrie, Alta. shot an incredible overall score of 7-under par to take the victory. Derek Rucki of Chestermere, Alta. finished one stroke behind to place second. Fleming and Rucki both shot a commendable first-day score of 67, but Fleming was able to snag the title by one stroke with a second round score of 70. Matt Williams from Calgary finished close behind in third with a score of four-under-par. Five boys in this division scored under par for the weekend, proving that CJGA’s Alberta schedule will pose some close competition between many skilled players over the course of the season. The CJGA would also like to congratulate Tyler Saunders for scoring a hole-in-one on the eigth hole.
 
In the Girls division, Sabrine Garrison of Calgary took first place with an overall score of 8-over-par, shooting 76 for both rounds. Kat Kennedy of Okotoks, Alta. placed second with a two-day score of 157 while Jaclyn Lee from Calgary finished three strokes behind to capture third.

About the Lipton Brisk Canada Cup
The 9th annual Lipton Brisk Canada Cup is the only national Ryder Cup style event in Canada. The West vs. East Ryder Cup matches were designed to help elite Canadian junior golfers develop the necessary skills to handle intense mental preparation and prepare for match play events on the international scene. Team East leads the overall series 5-3.
