Saskatoon, Sask. (May 16, 2011) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) completed its first event of the Saskatchewan schedule over the weekend at The Willows Golf and Country Club. This tournament was a regional qualifier for many major upcoming events, including the Euro Junior Golf Cup, North America Cup, Jr. Worlds, and Canada Cup West Team. Therefore, juniors had high hopes of performing well over the weekend to qualify for any of these events. Despite warm weather over the weekend, golfers were challenged both days by strong winds of up to 40 km/h.

In the Boys 14 & Under group, Noah Vongphit from Regina, Sask. took victory with scores of 76 and 75. Vongphit explained, “I played well, although I could’ve done fairly better. My short game was definitely on – my wedges were tight and I drained a lot of putts. It feels good to have this win since I haven’t won in a long time, especially in such windy conditions.” Prince Albert, Sask. natives Zach Hurd and Cory Sawchuck took second and third place respectively.

The Boys 15-19 division was the largest and most competitive field with a tight finish for the top places. Dallas Mengel of Saskatoon, Sask. narrowly overtook Jehremy Ryde from Eston, Sask. by two strokes in the second round to take the victory. Both of these individuals scored 75 on the first day, but Mengel was able to post the better score on the second round of competition with an impressive 71. “I played really well in the wind, although it was tough to get the ball close to the hole. I did well with lag putting and I was able to keep my drives in play,” Mengel said. “This win feels good – it’s always nice to get confidence early in the year.” Finishing in third and fourth with 7-over and 8-over-par respectively were Jordan Arndt and Chase Porter of Saskatoon, Sask. Arndt was able to maintain his solid third place finish through some strong play on the second day, shooting a one-under-par 71 with three birdies.

Jenna Roadley of Winnipeg, Man. and Kayla Sawchuck from Prince Alberta, Sask. went head-to-head in the Girls division. Roadley took the win with a two-day score of 8-over-par, including a second round of 74. Roadley explained, “I played pretty steady in this tough wind. I’d say my iron play was extremely strong, and my putting was great on the first day. It was a nice course to play; the greens rolled really well and true.”

The next event in the Saskatchewan schedule will be part of the Nike Golf Junior Series/Stephen Ames Cup Qualifiers. It will be happening June 11-12 at Cooke Municipal Golf Course in Prince Albert, Sask.
