TELUS Jr. Skins Game enables 80 aspiring junior golfers to experience the thrill of competition and raise money for a worthy cause

Canadian junior golfers converged on the Fairmont Banff Springs golf course over the Victoria Day long weekend and raised $21,100 for the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta at the annual CJGA TELUS Jr. Skins Game.

“We are thrilled to be the recipient of the TELUS Jr. Skins as it will allow us to support these children going through the cancer journey and surround them with joy and spirit at Camp Kindle. Together these children will discover they can conquer the high ropes, create long lasting friendships and realize they are not alone in their battle with cancer. Thank you to TELUS and the champions of this weekend who will be reaching out to support these children affected by childhood cancer.” said a very appreciative Christine McIver, founder and CEO of KCCFA.

The weekend’s unique tournament was conducted under a Stableford format in which the juniors received ‘skins’ for their score, mirroring that of the TELUS World Skins Game theme. TELUS gave $100 to the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta for every ‘skin’ won by the players during the two-day event. There were 211 ‘skins’ won for a total donation of $21,100.

“TELUS congratulates our junior golfers on a wonderful tournament over the weekend which raised $21,100 for the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta,” said Monty Carter, senior vice-president, TELUS Enterprise Solutions. “Not only did 80 incredible junior golfers tackle the course for the 2011 TELUS World Skins Game with the enthusiasm of a pro, more importantly, they helped enrich the lives of children living with cancer.”

Every junior who participated in the event also received a pair of tickets to the TELUS World Skins Game, taking place July 25-26, enabling them to see their golf heroes in person, as well as a chance to take part in some special golf experiences, including the opportunity to be a walking standard bearer for the pros during the main event at Banff Springs.

“The Canadian Junior Golf Association was excited to partner once again with TELUS to provide a unique golfing experience to junior golfers in line with the TELUS World Skins Game” said Brad Parkins, Chief Operations Officer, Canadian Junior Golf Association. “The real winners this weekend however are the Kids Cancer Care Foundation and those children who benefit from Camp Kindle and the CJGA is extremely proud to have had a part in raising $21,100 to provide opportunities to those children living with cancer.”

TELUS has been a long-time supporter of charities that advance cancer research, awareness and detection. TELUS’ recent Go Pink campaign raised $500,000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation, with funds being used towards the purchase of digital mammography equipment. TELUS most recently gave $200,000 in March to Edmonton’s Campaign for Prostate Health in support of the advancement of prostate cancer health in Alberta. TELUS has also been a proud supporter of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Rethink Breast Cancer, the Canadian Cancer Society, Ovarian Cancer Canada, Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation, CancerCare Manitoba, Saskatchewan Cancer Agency and the BC Cancer Foundation. Since 2000, TELUS, its team members and retirees have contributed $15 million toward finding a cure for cancer, and continue to raise funds and awareness for early detection.

The Alberta Cancer Foundation has been selected as the benefiting charity for the 2011 TELUS World Skins Game happening Monday, July 25 and Tuesday, July 26 at the Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course. As part of TELUS’ ongoing commitment to ‘give where we live’, and the TELUS World Skins Game’s long-standing tradition of benefiting local charities, the event will support the funding of new technology and applications in clinical trials for patients undergoing cancer treatment in Alberta. In addition, it will help fund the use of cancer applications and devices for patient monitoring, tracking and health records to enhance treatment and the continuum of care.
