CJGA Wraps-Up Double Qualifier in Red Deer

Red Deer, Alta. (May 30, 2011) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) concluded the final round of the Nike Golf Junior Series/Stephen Ames Cup Qualifier yesterday at River Bend Golf & Recreation Area in Red Deer, Alta. Participants, playing on the par-72 Championship course, were trying to earn spots into two prestigious CJGA national events. The Nike Golf Junior Championship is a 54-hole tournament consisting of qualifying winners from around the country. The Stephen Ames Cup pins CJGA Team Canada against Trinidad and Tobago in a Ryder-Cup-style event.

Hometown favourite Brett Pasula of Red Deer, Alta. captured the title in the Boys 14 & Under division. He had two rounds of 71 and 75 to finish the event at 146 (+2). He had five birdies in the final round and carded an eagle on No. 7 Saturday. Andrew Brown of Calgary had back-to-back birdies on No. 2 and 3 yesterday to finish two shots behind Pasula in second. Michael Pruss of Red Deer, Alta. finished in third place.

In the Boys 15-19 division, Kieran Stranden of Edmonton shot two blistering rounds of 69 to win the championship. He had four birdies and an eagle Sunday to finish the tournament at -6 (138). Red Deer native Matt Codd finished eight shots behind Stranden in second place at +2 (146). Derek Roach of Calgary had rounds of 76 and 72 to finish in third.
Megan Paul of Calgary won her first tournament of the season in the Girls 11-19 division. She shot consistent rounds of 81 and 82 for a 163 (+19) two-day total. Bria Jansen of Cochrane, Alta. and Kelsey Major of Calgary finished in a tie for second while Sarah Nishide of Qualicum Beach, B.C. ended the day in third.
