Richmond Hill, Ont. (June 9, 2011) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) is preparing for another Nike Golf Junior Series/Stephen Ames Cup Qualifier this weekend at Blue Springs Golf Club in Acton, Ont. The full field of golfers will navigate the par-72 course that features changing elevation, tall trees and great views. Participants are playing for spots into two CJGA national events. The Nike Golf Junior Championship is a competitive tournament featuring qualifying winners from across the country. The Stephen Ames Cup pins CJGA Team Canada against Trinidad and Tobago in a Ryder Cup format.
Carter Simon of Sutton West, Ont. looks to continue his quest towards history in the Boys 14 & Under division. He’s captured three consecutive victories on tour and is expected to contend once again this weekend at Blue Springs. Qualifying last month for the Junior World Championships in San Diego, Simon sits four wins back of the record set by Humphrey Young who won seven consecutive tournaments to start the season in 2003. Mississauga, Ont. natives Christian Poirier and Kyle Gorospe will also be in contention come Sunday afternoon. Poirier finished third and his only event of the year in Ajax, Ont. and Gorospe’s posted three top-10 results.
It’s expected to be a tight leaderboard in the Boys 15-19 division. Mathew Capern of Oakville, Ont. and Jordan Hutchings of Woodslee, Ont. posted great results this year. Capern has two top-five finishes, including a T3 at the season opener. Hutchings is coming off a second place performance last week at Paris Grand after a final round 71 (-1). Cory O’Connor of Rockwood, Ont., Anthony Salis of Oakville, Ont. and Connor Watt of Mississauga, Ont. are playing in their first CJGA event of the year.
Rachel Pollock of Guelph, Ont. goes for her second title of the season in the Girls 11-19 division.  She won the event in Richmond Hill, Ont. and finished second at the Junior Worlds Qualifier at Wolf Run. Brittany Davidson, a veteran of the CJGA tour, is in the field and expected to challenge for the top spot. Dylaney Day of Toronto and Jessica Ip of Richmond Hill, Ont. are other names to watch.
Tee times for both rounds start at 1 p.m. Spectators are encouraged to attend.
