Breda, Netherlands (July 13, 2011) – Today marked the opening round of the 2011 Riverwoods Junior Open at the Toxandria Golf Club in Breda, Netherlands. Also known as the Dutch Junior Open this event has given talented international fields the chance to showcase their skills at one of Europe’s premiere junior golf events. Five Canadian players representing CJGA Team Canada took to the tight Toxandria layout this morning. The conditions were not ideal for the field with cold temperatures, high winds, and a consistent rain challenging the juniors for the duration of the first round.

In the Boys Division Paul Lockwood with the English Golf Union was able to set the pace with a first round score of 68 (-4). Directly behind Lockwood is Thomas Pieters of Germany firing an opening round 69 (-3). In a tie for third behind Pieters is Jordi Sanso Alberich of Spain and Ruben van Uden of the Netherlands both shooting a 70 (-2). Behind the Spanish and Dutch players is a flurry of players shooting scores of 71 (-1) and level par 72. CJGA Team Canada struggled to adjust to the Dutch weather with Ian Mmbando of Lethbridge, AB shooting an opening round 80 (+8) putting him in a tie for 65. Behind Mmbando for the Canadian squad is Conor MacDonald firing a first round score of 81 (+9). Not far behind MacDonald is Woodbridge, ON native Javier Diaz tallying a first round total of 84 (+12) and Chris MacDonald shooting an 88 (+16). CJGA Team Canada will require a solid effort over the next two rounds in order to be in contention come day three when the cut takes place.
To no one’s surprise in the Girls Division Lauren Taylor of England was able to secure the first round lead with Leticia-Ras Anderica of Spain with both girls shooting a score of level par 72. Taylor was crowned British Ladies Amateur Champion last month in Northern Ireland becoming one of the youngest champions in the tournaments history at just 16 years of age. Right behind Taylor and Anderica are Krista Puisite of Latvia and Pinrath Loomboonruang of Thailand tallying opening rounds of 73 (+1). Shannon Lee Greenshields of Pincourt, QC fired an opening round total of 81 (+9) putting her in a tie for 35. “I didn’t do as well as I wanted to today but I am going to approach tomorrow with a positive attitude and get some shots back so that I make the cut and be there on Saturday” explained Greenshields.
Second round action begins tomorrow morning at 7:30AM at the Toxandria Golf Club. All players will be looking to move up the leader board in order to leave themselves a cushion going in to the third round where there will be a cut. Please follow the links below for all results and second round pairings.
