Calgary, Alta. (August 18, 2011) – Day two of the 7th annual Stephen Ames Cup concluded this afternoon at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club in Calgary where CJGA Team Canada and Trinidad & Tobago faced-off in four matches of foursomes. Building off their impressive play from day one, Canada took three of the four matches and enters the final day of competition with a strangle hold over their opponents 5 ½ to 2 ½.
“Our patience paid off today,” said John Lawrence, CJGA Team Canada Manager. “We got a great bunch of juniors and we’re looking forward to tomorrow’s matches.”
In match one, Alyssa Getty of Leamington, Ont. and Sabrine Garrison of Calgary dispatched the Trinidad & Tobago team 6&4. After the Trinidad & Tobago side of Christina Ferriera and Ysabelle Lawrence won the first hole, Canada rebounded and took control of the match, closing out their counterparts on the fourteenth hole.
In match two, Marlies Klekner-Alt and Grace Howie defeated Natalya Rahamatula and Aleema Jack 4&2. The Canadian players, both of which hail from Ottawa proved to be great partners complimenting each other throughout the match. “It was a great match and they are great opponents” said Klekner-Alt following the match. “It was nice to pick up a full point for the team after halving the fourball match yesterday”.
The third match of the day provided some exciting moments and was filled with excellent play from both sides. Canadians Kyle MacDonald of Oakville, Ont. and Patrick Murphy of Crossfield, Alta. defeated their counterparts Wan Ju Lee and Matthew Marquez 5&3. “Kyle and I did a great job as a team,” said Murphy. “We played smart and executed the shots we had to. I’m going up against a great opponent in Matthew tomorrow and am really looking forward to that.”
The final match of the day was a back and forth battle between the Trinidad & Tobago team of Talin Rajendranath and Jessel Mohammed and Canadians Kieran Standen of Edmonton, Alta. and Blair Hamilton of Burlington, Ont. All square on seventeen tee, the Trinidad side was able to capture the hole and to guarantee the hole and ensure the Trinidadians would not be shut out. Playing the final hole, the Canadian side was unable to get up and down giving their opponents a 1UP victory.
“We put up a great fight today,” said Scott Anderson, Team Trinidad & Tobago Manager. “Canada kept up the pressure and some of our players are still getting used to the tournament atmosphere. It’s going to be an uphill battle, but we have the talent and will coming out tomorrow to compete.”
