Gauvin, Feltmate and Henderson win CJGA Atlantic Junior Championship

Oakfield, N.S. (August 23, 2011) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) concluded the final round of the Atlantic Junior Championship today at Oakfield Golf & Country Club in Oakfield, N.S. After rain and gale-force winds wreaked havoc on golfers yesterday, players were greeted with sunny skies and perfect scoring conditions this afternoon. Oakfield provided juniors with a fantastic setup and challenged them with fast greens. This event was also a qualifier for the Canadian International Junior Challenge taking place in September.

After day one, three players were tied for the lead in the Boys 14 & Under division. Patrick Gauvin of Dieppe, N.B. fired the best round of the day this afternoon to win the title. He shot a seven-over-par 79 to finish the event at 161 (+17). He birdied the par-five No. 17 which was the difference maker over Nicholas Brue of Fall River, N.S. Brue fired an 80 (+8) to finished one shot back at 162 (+18). Owen Patterson of Bedford, N.S. rounded out the top three at 163 (+19) after an 81 (+9) today.
 
Alex Feltmate of Fletcher’s Lake, N.S. beat Andrew Reid of Cole Harbour, N.S. in a playoff to win the Boys 15-19 division. On the first playoff hole, Reid, who shot a tournament best 73 (+1) today, put his tee shot in the water which allowed Feltmate to cruise to victory. Feltmate fired a 74 (+2) to finish with a 153 (+9) two-day total. Bradfrod Curren of Hammonds Plains, N.S. ended two shots back in third.
 
Julia Henderson of New Glasgow, N.S. was victorious in the Girls division. She had an 81 (+9) in the final round to finish at 159 (+15).Brennadette Little of Westville, N.S. ended three shots behind Henderson in second. First-round leader Emily Romkey of Fall River, N.S. rounded out the top three at 165 (+21).
 
The CJGA Atlantic Junior Championship concludes a successful 2011 season on the east coast. The CJGA will return to Atlantic Canada in Summer 2012.
