Lansdowne, Ont. (August 23, 2011) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) continued the Nike Golf Junior Championship today at Smuggler’s Glen Golf Course in Lansdowne, Ont. Faced with stronger winds than yesterday and faster greens as the course firmed up from Sunday’s downpour, many juniors were able to battle through to post impressive scores yet again.

In the Boys 14 & Under division, Jordan Lu of Vancouver, B.C. sits comfortably ahead by six strokes in first place after shooting a 73 today. Lu shot a staggering 4-under on the front nine with five birdies, but had some trouble on the back shooting into the 60’s. Lu explained, “On the front my putting was pretty good – I was making a lot of long putts. My irons into the green were also really good. However, on the back nine, I just couldn’t find my putting stroke.”
In second place is Sam McNulty of Port Perry, Ont. after shooting 1-over 72 today including three birdies, followed one stroke behind by Nicholas Quesnel of Sudbury, Ont., who also shot +1 today. Fourth place golfer MacKenzie Carter of Cobourg, Ont. sits a few strokes back from the top three, with many more golfers right on his tail. It will be interesting to see tomorrow which juniors can post low scores in order to vault themselves up the leaderboard.
The Boys 15-19 division will be an exciting competition tomorrow as Marc Casullo of Aurora, Ont. and Colton Kalkanis from Hillsdale, Ont. are tied for first place. Casullo posted a 76 today while Kalkanis pushed himself up the leaderboard by shooting a 1-over 72. Both boys had three birdies today. Casullo said, “My putting was really well today, short game definitely saved me. The greens were a little bumpy today which made it difficult, but I’m happy with how I played.”
Jack Wood of Banff, Alta. sits one stroke behind in third place after shooting 76 today, following three strokes behind by Zackary Secord of Midland, Ont. The gap between players in this division is very small and it is still any player’s trophy to seize during the final round.
In the Girls division, Grace Howie of Ottawa, Ont. moved ahead on the leaderboard to secure first place after shooting 74 today with one birdie. “I was hitting my driver solid – I think I hit every fairway,” Howie explained. “My irons were a lot better than yesterday. The eighteenth hole always seems to get me though on the shot into the green. I’m gonna have to figure that one out for tomorrow.”
Carolyn Lee from Calgary, Alta. also moved up the leaderboard to second place today after carding a 75 with one birdie, and sits four strokes behind the leader. Annie Lacombe of Laval, Que. and Rachel Pollock from Guelph, Ont. are tied for third place. Competition is close in this group and the competition is still up for grabs going into tomorrows’ round.
Tee times begin tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m. Spectators are encouraged to attend.
