England Off to a Strong Start at Canadian International Junior Challenge

CLEARVIEW TOWNSHIP, ON (September 13, 2011) – The Canadian International Junior Challenge opened today at the beautiful OslerBrook Golf & Country Club in Clearview Township and the course proved to be a good test of golf to all the players. The eight competing teams battled strong winds (also known as the OslerBrook breeze) all day on the Graham Cooke layout.  The three time defending champions from England are looking to extend the streak to four jumping out to an early lead following the first round of play.
“I am very pleased with the way all the boys played today, it was a very testing golf course” said English Team Manager Mike Jones. “My message to the team before the round was to just keep the ball in play and limit big mistakes, and we did that today.”
The English team was led by the play of James Simpson who shot an opening round 73 (+1) today as the English team compiled a round one total of 222 (+6). Thomas Rowland opened his tournament with a 74 (+2), while Paul Kinnear and Jamie Bower opened with 75 (+3) and 77 (+5) respectively.
The Norwegian Golf Federation currently sits in second place in the team competition, finishing the first round with a 228 (+12) team total. The Norwegians were led by Kristian Johannessen who had the low round of the day 72 (E). His teammates, Andreas Gjesteby, Fredrik Fossum, and Tim Gamborg shot round of 74 (+2), 82 (+10) and 87 (15) respectively.
CJGA Team Canada is currently sits in sixth spot after shooting a team total 235 (+19), led by Hillsdale, Ontario native Colton Kalkanis, opening with a round of 78 (+6). Patrick Murphy of Crossfield, Alberta was just one stroke more opening the tournament with a 79 (+7).  Matt Williams of Calgary, Alberta shot an opening round 80 (+8) while William Mahood opened with an 86 (+14).
Colombia, after finishing runner-up in 2010, currently sit in third position opening with a team total 231 (+15) followed by Costa Rica at 232 (+16) and the United States at 234 (+18). Trinidad & Tobago sits in seventh position after opening with a team total 242 (+26) followed by Mexico at 250 (+34).
The Canadian International Junior Challenge will continue on Wednesday September 14th beginning at 8:30 a.m. at OslerBrook G&CC.
