CLEARVIEW TOWNSHIP, ON (September 14, 2011) – The English Golf Union continues to lead after the second round at the Canadian International Junior Challenge at OslerBrook Golf & Country Club after completion of today’s second round. With strong winds blowing through the Graham Cooke designed golf course, the English squad held strong to take a ten stroke lead into tomorrow’s final round.
The English side was again led by James Simpson who played a second consecutive round of 73 (+1) to expand the English team’s lead by two strokes. England posted a team total of 223 (+7) on the tough OslerBrook layout for a 445 (+13) two day total. Thomas Rowland and Paul Kinnear both shot rounds of 75 (+3) while Jamie Bower scored a second round 77 (+5).
Kristian Johannessen of Norway will take a two stroke lead into the final round of the tournament after shooting a second round of even par (72). “I have played well the first two rounds even though I made a few mistakes out there today” said Johannessen after his round. “I have been able to keep the ball in play and have hot a lot of green. This golf course is one the best I have played, and I have played a lot of golf courses” he added. England’s James Simpson and Costa Rica’s Jose Mendez will look to erase the two stroke deficit tomorrow to capture medalist honors.
The Canadian squad put in a better performance in today’s second round lead by Colton Kalkanis of Hillsdale, Ontario. Kalkanis shot a second round 73 (+1) to help catapult the Canadian side up the leader board to fourth spot in the team competition at 463 (+31). Patrick Murphy of Crossfield, Alberta improved his play in the second round shooting a 76 (+4) and sits in 12th spot overall. Matt Williams of Calgary, Alberta and William Mahood of Oakville, Ontario both shot rounds of 77 (+5) to round out the Canadian scores.
The Colombian team continued their strong play and took over second spot with a team total of 224 (+8) for the day, 455 (+23) for the tournament. The Norwegians, led by Johannessen, sit in third just two back of Colombia at 457 (+25).
Costa Rica (467), USA (482), Trinidad & Tobago (487) and Mexico (514) fill out the field respectively.
The Canadian International Junior Challenge will conclude on Thursday with tee-times beginning at 8:30 a.m. at OslerBrook.
