CJGA World Junior Challenge Underway at Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club

-International Flavor atop Respective Leader boards-

Palm Harbor, FL (December 28, 2012) –  The Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) kicked off the 20th annual CJGA World Junior Challenge, presented by Golfweek at Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club early this morning. It was brisk and clear with a slight breeze as 180 golfers teed-off. In the opening round the Boys 15-19 Division took on the Copperhead course, while the Boys 14 & Under Division and the Girls Division toured the Island course. There is a three-way tie ahead the Boys 15-19 Division, while Cao Sen (Lake Mary, FL) and Selena Costabile (Thornhill, ON) have all taken first round leads in their respective fields.
Renato Paratore (Italy), Robin Wang (Lake Mary, FL), and Jerry Zhu (Lake Mary, FL) finished tied for first place after shooting an opening round 72(+1) on the Copperhead course. The Boys 15-19 Division is very close with 11 players within two-strokes of the lead. Saturday, the division will see a different challenge as they play the Island course in the last round before the field is separated into a championship and consolation final. The top 50% (and ties) of the Division will compete in the championship final, the same cut will apply to all other divisions.
Sen was the sole player to finish under par today, scoring 36-35 – 71(-1) earning a one-stroke lead over Sachin Kumar (Trinidad & Tobago) in the Boys 14 & Under Division. Sam Jung (Chantilly, VA) and Charles-Eric Belanger (Quebec, QC) trail closely at 73(+1) and 74(+2) respectively. Sen finished the round with 5 birdies, the most in the field, showing he has the skill to go low. Kumar played a very different style, posting 14 pars throughout the round.
In the Girls Division, Costabile birdied two of her final four finishing holes in order to a one stroke lead over Maria Alejandra Villalobos (Gainsville, FL) and Hana Furuichi (Orlando, FL). Costabile started her round on the back nine and struggled early. She was able to turn it around and post a final nine of 34(-2) in order to finish with 75(+3) and the first round lead. “It was cold this morning and a little hard to get going,” said Costabile, “I tried not to worry about my bogeys. I knew there were birdie holes coming up, and that allowed me to stay confident.”
The CJGA Junior Linkster Tour for juniors 5-13 years of age held round one of competition on the North course.  The Linksters competed in five different age divisions. After the first round of play Anne Yu (China) leads the Girls 10-13 scoring 73(+2) and Emily Zhu (Richmond Hill, ON) posted 35(-1) to lead the Girls 9 & Under. There is a four way tie for the lead of the Boys 11-13 Division, as Jacob Presutti (Brampton, ON), Michael Adler (Winnetka, IL), Stewart Slayden (Ponte Vedra Beach, FL), and Marco Trstenjak (Winnipeg, MB) all finished at 77(+6). Aaron Zhang (Lake Mary, FL) leads the Boys 9-10 Division with a 72 (+1). Justin Sui (Lake Orion, MI) marched to top of the leader board with a 33(-3).
