England Takes Slim Lead at Tri Nations Cup

Bela Bela, Limpopo, South Africa (January 12, 2010) The English Golf Union jumped out to an early lead at the Tri Nations Cup following first round action at Zebula Golf Resort & Spa in South Africa, collecting a total of17 points on the day. Host nation South Africa is right on their heels after collecting 15 points, while CJGA Team Canada was slow out of the gate, picking up only 4 points in the opening round.
CJGA playing captain Riley Fleming, 16, of Airdrie, Alberta picked up two points with his 4&3 victory over South African Haydn Porteous. “I feel as though we have a great chance tomorrow in alternate shot” said Fleming. “We have really grown as a team, and we are looking forward to the challenge” he added.
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native Jerry Christiansen picked up the other 2 points for the Canadian squad with his 2&1 victory over England’s James Burnett.
“The team showed a lot of character playing against two strong international teams” stated John Lawrence, CJGA Team Canada non-playing captain. “I am confident the team will find their rhythm tomorrow and fight back.”
The Tri Nations Cup will continue play Wednesday and wrap up on Thursday. Two points are awarded for a victory while one point is awarded for a halve.
