September 1 , 2006

Pitt Meadows, B.C.
- The final Bowden’s Junior Series tournament of the season ended on Wednesday with a playoff deciding the Girls Division at the BC Fall Series at Swan-e-Set Bay Resort Club in Pitt Meadows, B.C.

Despite some bad weather on the second day, 10-year-old Alix Kong of West Vancouver, B.C. and Brooklin Kraakman, 12, of Deroche, B.C. battled it out for top spot in the division after finishing the round tied with a 189 total. On the first playoff hole, Kong’s par proved to be good enough to capture her first CJGA victory in her first event of the year. “I made two long putts today,” said Kong. “I also hit my driver and woods well.” Langley, B.C golfer Jihae Hwang, 14, finished third, six strokes back.

In the Boys 17-19 Division, Preston Pierson, 18, of Langley, followed up a first round score of 75 with a 78 on Wednesday in the difficult conditions to finish the tournament with the low overall score of the tournament, 153, to take home top spot. “I hit the ball poorly, but my putting was great,” said Pierson, who was also making his 2006 CJGA debut.  Mission, B.C.’s Ryan Stugis, 17, was seven shots behind the leader at 160, while 18-year-old Maxwell Mcguillan, of Vancouver finished ten shots off the pace.

Kevin Ho, 12, of Coquitlam, B.C. held on to his large first round lead in the Boys 13 & Under Division, finishing seven shots ahead of his nearest competitor, finishing with a two-day total of 159 “I made some bad shots with my short game, but my putting was pretty good,” said Ho, another 2006 first time winner. Richmond, B.C. resident Brian Harrison, 12, was his closest competition, closing out seven shots behind.  Navnoor Bains, 12, of Surrey, B.C. claimed third spot, finishing well back of the leaders.

Alex Chen, 14, of Richmond went wire-to-wire to capture the Boys 14-16 Division title. “My short game was good, but my ball-striking was terrible today,” said Chen, who posted a score of 160 (77, 83) at Swan-e-Set for his first CJGA win of the year.  Chen held off second round charges from Vancouver’s Keun Kim, 16, and Nike Golf Junior Championship participant, 14-year-old Christian Pomerleau, of Kelowna, B.C., who trailed by five and six shots respectively.
