CJGA Team Canada Wins Stephen Ames Cup

Stouffville, Ont. (August 16, 2007) – Despite a strong final round showing by the visiting Trinidad & Tobago Golf Association, CJGA Team Canada withstood the challenge to capture the 3rd annual Stephen Ames Cup on Friday.  The event, conducted at Granite Golf Club and hosted by PGA Tour Pro, Stephen Ames, was captured by a final score of 13 – 7 by the Canadian contingent.

CJGA Team Canada collected 5 ½ out of a possible 10 points on Friday to seal the victory.  Top performers included Julia Hodgson of Unionville, Ont., Hayley Brown of Newmarket, Ont. and Alex Dumais of Caledon East, Ont. who all went undefeated in three rounds of Ryder Cup style tournament play.

With the victory, CJGA Team Canada has posted a 3 – 0 record in Ryder Cup style events in 2007.  It is the first time this has happened in the 15-year history of the association and bodes well for the future of golf in this country.

“I’m proud of the way our team played all week,” acknowledged John Lawrence, the non-playing captain of CJGA Team Canada.  “The Trinidad & Tobago side showed exemplary sportsmanship and provided a strong challenge to the Canadian players.  We look forward to defending in 2007 in Trinidad & Tobago.”
