Playoff Decides Overall Champion at CJGA Orion Securities Junior Classic

The final round of the CJGA Orion Securities Junior Classic was held today at the Links at Willodell in Niagara Falls, Ont. It took a marathon playoff to decide the overall and Boys 17-19 Division winner as Adam McCauley, 18, of Duncan, B.C. and Brian Lee, 17, of Oakville, Ont. finished 54 holes tied at 212 (-4)

It took four playoff holes to decide a winner as McCauley finally drained a 12 foot birdie putt to clinch the victory. "It's a shame that somebody had to lose," said McCauley. "Brian and I both played extremely well." The win is McCauley's first on tour and well deserved as he has a number of runner up finishes to his credit. Third place in the division went to local golfer Aaron Wagner, 18. Wagner closed with a 69 to finish at 219, seven shots out of second.

The Boys 14-16 Division title was captured by Gregory Merz, 16, of Rochester, N.Y at 215 (-1). Merz recorded rounds of 73, 67, and 73 to take the division by one stroke ahead of first round leader David Sheman, 16, of Newmarket, Ont. "We were back and forth today," said Merz, of his duel with Sheman. "He really played well." Merz's clutch eight footer on 18 assured him of the victory. The low round of the tournament came from third place finisher Alex Carrigan, 16, of Guelph, Ont. Carrigan recorded a 7-under 65 on Thursday to move up from eighth.

Shea Varty, 11, of Port Perry, Ont. captured the Boys 13 & Under Division by four strokes ahead of Jordan Jackson, 12, of Toronto, Ont. after closing with an 88 on Thursday for a 268 total. "I played pretty good this week, except on the first day," said Varty. "I relaxed a little more after the first round and started swinging better." Christopher Mazurkiewicz, 10, of Mississauga, Ont. finished third in the division.

Sonya Jang, 17, of North York, Ont. held off a late charge from Jacqueline Stol, 13, of Peterborough, Ont. to capture the Girls Division by six strokes. Stol fired a division low 77 on Thursday to move up from third to second. "My approach shots really saved me today," said Jang. "I struggled a bit with my driver." Vanessa Stol, 15, of Peterborough, Ont. took third place honours at 258.
