Lee Fires New Course Record 66 at King's Riding En Route To Capturing Boys 17-19 Division At
PING Eastern Canadian Junior Championship

July 8, 2004

AURORA, ON- The PING Eastern Canadian Junior Championship concluded Thursday afternoon at King's Riding Golf Club, in Aurora, Ont. with winners crowned in three different age divisions.

In what was undoubtedly the best 18-hole performance in his young golfing career, 17-year-old Oakville, Ont. native Brian Lee fired a staggering five under par round of 66, which included a hole in one on the par 3 11th hole, using a 7-iron from 171 yards. His ball struck the rough on the left side of the green and it found its way into the cup. "I jumped like Phil Mickelson did when he won the Masters," said an enthusiastic Lee who established a new course record for King's Riding with his round. "It was a great feeling."

Lee was even par 36 on the front and caught fire on the back nine, with a five under score of 30. The stellar round was more than enough to capture the Boys 17-19 Division as he took the flight by five strokes over 18-year-old Toronto, Ont. product Geoffrey McLeod. Third place in the division went to 18-year-old Mississauga, Ont. resident Michael Zizek, who claimed the final spot on the podium thanks in large part to a 73 in the final round.

After building a comfortable lead in the Boys 13 & Under Division Mackenzie Hughes, 13, of Dundas, Ont. took top spot in the Boys 13 & Under Division. He closed out the event with a tough round of 81 but overall, the youngster was satisfied with his week. "I played the back nines better all week compared to the front," said Hughes. Hughes added that he was able to overcome adversity throughout the course of the event. "Whenever I had a poor hole, I was able to bounce back." A pair of 13-year-old Torontonians rounded out the top three in the division as Daniel Kim finished second and Russell Budd ended the tournament third in the division.

The quest for first place in the Boys 14-16 Division went right down to the wire as Ren Han, 15, of Richmond, B.C. finished with a three day total of 224. "It's a really nice feeling to have won one of the CJGA's championship events," said an excited Han. Han will also be playing at the PING Western Canadian Junior Championship later this month, at Ledgeview Golf and Country Club, in Abbotsford, B.C. Second place in the division went to Nathan Peck, 16, of Tecumseh, Ont. who finished two strokes off the pace while Nolan Knill, 15, of Barrie, Ont. captured the final spot on the podium.
