Final Round Washed Out at CJGA Wilson Sports Junior

TOTTENHAM, ON- It wasn't the way participating juniors wanted the first CJGA event on the Ontario schedule to end, but Mother Nature played a major role in the outcome of the Wilson Sports Junior at Woodington on Sunday. Constant rain and frigid conditions washed out the final round but spirits remained high as division winners were crowned in all age divisions.

It was a great start to the season for 13 year-old Lucas Leibel of Toronto, Ont. as he captured the Boys 13 & Under Division and shot the lowest round of the tournament, registering a 74. Two juniors tied for second. Alex Mckee, 13, of Newmarket, Ont. and Daniel Kim, 13, of North York, Ont. both shot 85 to finish deadlocked. The win is Leibel's first CJGA victory and will surely be his last in the Boys 13 & Under Division as he celebrates his 14th birthday on Monday. Nonetheless, he was happy with his performance. "I played really well this weekend, it was a big improvement from my performance here last year," said Leibel, who also added that his solid approach shots kept his score low.

In the Boys 17-19 Division, Leamington, Ont. native Mathew Iacobelli finished at the top of the leaderboard on the strength of his opening round 76. Iacobelli was awarded a brand new Wilson Deep Red driver for his efforts. The win is also his first CJGA victory. "Not a bad round, although I missed some short putts. However, to win the first event of the season is a huge confidence booster," said Iacobelli. Vito Polera, 17, of Maple Ont. finished second at 80. Benjamin Shain, 17, of Toronto, Ont. finished third at 82.

Another first time winner emerged from the Boys 14-16 Division. Steven Jackson, 15, of Toronto, Ont. was victorious by two strokes ahead of Chanse Regier, 16, of Ripley, Ont. Jackson fired the second low score for the event with a 75. Barrie, Ont. resident Luke Godin, 16, captured third place honours at 79.

In the Girls Division, the streak continued with another first time winner. Toronto, Ont. native Ali Landon, 16, fought through the difficult weather conditions early Sunday morning to complete the first round and capture her first title. "The inclement weather was definitely a challenge but I did not let it dampen my spirits," said Landon. Augusta James, 11, of Shelburne, Ont. finished second. In third was Oakville, Ont. resident Vicki Adderley, 17.

Although Mother Nature did not co-operate over the two days of the Wilson Sports Junior at Woodington Lake, a full field of over 80 golfers were happy to be participating competitively again. Woodington Lake proved to be a great host to the opening event. The CJGA Ontario schedule continues next weekend in Belleville, Ont.

Two junior golfers aged 15-17 will earn an exemption into the 52nd Annual East Aurora International Masters, the oldest junior golf invitational in North America. The tournament is held at East Aurora Country Club in East Aurora, NY from June 28th to July 2nd. Past champions include Joey Sindelar, Briny Baird, and Rory Sabbatini.
