The
Ontario portion of the 2004 CJGA schedule kicks off the first
weekend of May at Woodington Lake Golf Club in Tottenham, for
the Wilson Sports Junior at Woodington Lake. The event will serve
as a qualifier for the East Aurora International Junior Masters,
a prestigious international tournament scheduled to take place
in East Aurora, NY later this summer.
“The CJGA is looking forward to continuing its strong
relationship with Wilson Sports,” said Earl Fritz, CJGA
Executive Director. “The first event on our Ontario schedule
will take place at a top notch facility, which should set the
tone for an exciting golf season, especially with the great
support of Wilson Sports,” Fritz added.
“Wilson Sports is a strong supporter of junior golf in
Canada and the programs offered by the CJGA,” said Doug
Coombs, Director of Marketing, Golf, and Racquet Sports for
Wilson Sports. We’re excited to be the title sponsor for
two CJGA events this year and expect that the opening weekend
at Woodington Lake be a great start to the CJGA Ontario schedule.”
The Boys 14-16 Division will be a competitive one, especially
with the presence of a few 14-year-olds who excelled in the
Boys 13 & Under Division last season. 14-year-old Cheltenham,
Ont. product, Jed Walmsley, captured the Boys 13 & Under
division title at Woodington Lake last year and 14-year-old
Waterloo, Ont. native Josh Bamberger was victorious in nine
CJGA events in 2003. Both are expected to be in contention.
16-year-old Ju Young Park of Scarborough, Ont. finished second
in the division at Woodington Lake last year so expect him to
try and make the next step on the podium. 16-year-old Tottenham,
Ont. resident Nathan Zanelli-Brooks hopes to perform well in
his hometown.
The Boys 17-19 Division will also feature a young golfer hoping
to defend his division title at Woodington Lake as 18-year-old
Jon Kiru, of Brampton, Ont. is in the field. Kiru won the division
last year by virtue of a five hole playoff and went on to compete
at the East Aurora International Masters. Vito Polera is another
junior making the transition from one division to another. The
17-year-old native of Maple, Ont. captured the Boys 14-16 Division
at the CJGA 10th Anniversary Series at Oakridge last year.
The Girls Division also features some division winners from
last season with 16-year-old Toronto, Ont. resident Helena Harbridge
and 13-year-old Seul Ki Lo, who resides in Richmond Hill, Ont.
Harbridge captured three division titles in 2003 while Lo was
victorious on one occasion.
Finally, in the Boys 13 and Under Division, expect Daniel Kim,
13, of North York, Ont. to contend for the title. Kim was a
member of CJGA Team Canada East at last year’s Lipton
Brisk Canada Cup and captured six CJGA division titles. Johnathan
Kim-Moss, 13, of Brampton, Ont. should also contend as he was
victorious on three occasions in 2003. The division will feature
a handful of junior golfers who were regular fixtures on the
CJGA Junior Linkster Tour last year so it will be interesting
to see how they adapt to the CJGA Junior Tour.
Tee times for Saturday and Sunday will begin at 11:00 A.M.
As always, spectators are encouraged to attend.
Two junior golfers aged 15-17 will earn an exemption into the
52nd Annual East Aurora International Masters, the oldest junior
golf invitational in North America. The tournament is held at
East Aurora Country Club in East Aurora, NY from June 28th to
July 2nd. Past champions include Joey Sindelar, Briny Baird,
and Rory Sabbatini.

2004, the CJGA will conduct over 80 tournaments across Canada.
Included in the tournament schedule is a number of qualifying
events for international tournaments initiated to give juniors
the chance to represent their country, to test their skills
