| Markiw Clinches CJGA Wilson Sports Junior Title
RICHMOND, B.C.- Despite a delayed start time due to inclement weather on Tuesday, the Canadian Junior Golf Association completed the final round of the Wilson Sports Junior at Mayfair Lakes at Mayfair Lakes Golf & Country Club in Richmond, B.C. Tight divisional races highlighted the round, including a three way playoff in the Girls Division.
Sue Kim, 14, of Langley, B.C. recorded a par on the first playoff hole to defeat Laurenne Picard, 16, of White Rock, B.C. and Nari Kim, 16, of South Surrey, B.C. and earn the Girls Division title after one playoff hole. "I didn't play as well as I would have liked this week but I putted really well," said Kim. "The wind was tough." All three finished at 160.
Brandon Markiw, 17, of Sherwood Park, Alta. led from start to finish to claim the Boys 17-19 Division title ahead of Cory Grieve, 17, of Penticton, B.C. He closed with a 75 on Tuesday for a 147 total. "I played reasonably well considering the tough conditions," said Markiw. "Right now my game is just about where I want it to be." Third place in the division went to Dustin Cheong, 17, of Edmonton, Alta. at 158.
A close race decided the Boys 14-16 Division as Dong Su, 15, of Richmond, B.C. and Francis Santiago, 16, of Lynwood, Wash. Battled back and forth all day. Su closed with a tournament low 71 to claim the title by one stroke. Santiago closed with a 73. "I missed a few birdie opportunities today but hit my irons really solid," said Su. "I knew I had to shoot a good score." Ian Davis, 16, of Port Coquitlam, B.C claimed third in the division at 156, nine shots back of Su.
Perhaps the most impressive result from the event came from one of the youngest competitors. Brock Staller, 13, of Surrey, B.C. closed with a one-over 72 for a 147 total, good enough for a tie for lowest overall score. "I played really solid," said Staller. "Definitely the best I've been playing all year." Second place in the division went to Kelvin Ho, 12, of Richmond Hill, Ont. In third was Guuntas Sidhu, 10, of Port Coquitlam, B.C.
