Playoffs Decide Two Divisions at TaylorMade-adidas Golf Invitational

Aurora, Ont. – Rainy, cool conditions for the final round of the Canadian Junior Golf Association’s (CJGA) TaylorMade-adidas Golf Invitational hosted by Ian Leggatt could not slow down a very competitive field at Beacon Hall Golf Club in Aurora, Ont. as playoffs were the order of the day in three of the four age divisions.

The low overall score for the tournament was turned in Garrett Rank, 18, of Elmira, Ont. and Adam McCauley, 19, of Oakville, Ont. in a thrilling finale to the Boys 17 – 19 Division. McCauley’s final round 73 for a 146 total forced a playoff in the division with Rank who closed with a 74. It took only one extra hole for Rank to earn his first career CJGA victory after he drained a 15-foot birdie putt. “I was really excited, I birdied the first hole for the win.” Rank enjoyed his time on both courses. “This was a once in a life time experience,” he said. Michael Mottola, 18, of Niagara Falls, Ont. and Brian Lee, 18, of Oakville, Ont. tied for third at 147.

A final round division low 71 was turned in by Sudbury, Ontario’s Brennan Doyle, 16, of Sudbury, Ont. in the Boys 14 – 16 Division to force a playoff with Michael Gligic, 16, of Burlington, Ont. It took Gligic two holes to win his first CJGA title of 2006 after a par on the second hole. “I hit a good drive and a good second shot,” he explained. “I was hitting most of my greens in regulation and made my putts today,” said Gligic, of his final round 76. Both Gligic and Doyle finished at 149. Third place in the division went to first round co-leader Brett Cairns, 16, of Courtland, Ont. at 150 (73, 77)

A near playoff was avoided in the Boys 13 & Under Division as Zachary Balit, 13, of Montreal, Que. held on to his first round lead, closing with a 79 for a one-shot victory over Markham, Ont. resident Brandon Ng. His round included an amazing eagle on the par-five fourth from 150 yards. “I didn’t play my best today but I played solid,” said Balit. Paolo Addona, 12, of Anjou, Que. finished third in the division at 154 (76, 78)

In the Girls Division, Natalie Desjardins, 19 of Haileybury, Ont. was victorious with a 148 total (76, 72) for a career low. “ I could have done better, but I’m happy with the way I played,” said Desjardins. Following closely in second was Nicole Vandermade, 15, of Brantford, Ont. at 149 (72, 77). Third place when to Newmarket, Ont. resident, Hayley Brown, 14.
