Birdies for Dollars: An Inspiring Junior Golf Story

Yuvish Singh, like many junior golfers, makes his fair share of birdies on the CJGA Junior Linkster Tour.  But unlike many golfers, the rewards for his birdies go well beyond tournament results.

Every so often a junior golfer competing with the CJGA makes headlines for reasons that go beyond tournament results.  An avid member of the Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA), Yuvish Singh has created an inspirational foundation that combines his love for golf with his drive to help others.

In March of 2007, standout junior golfer, Yuvish Singh officially created his inspirational foundation called Birdies for the Children... The idea is to raise money for disadvantaged children around the world through UNICEF Canada.

At the age of only 12-years old, Yuvish has accomplished more than some people do in their lifetime. He set his mind on a goal, and is achieving it by assisting children in third world countries.  He will personally donate $20 every time he sinks a birdie in a golf tournament, and will up that to $50 dollars with every eagle He hopes that by bringing attention to this cause, it will encourage others to donate.  “So far this year I donated $650 dollars of my own money that that I earn working in my parents’ office. I also have eight corporate sponsors, which I am very happy about, that match every dollar I donate, Yuvish explains.  His corporate sponsor list includes the CJGA who have supported his efforts from the beginning.

Through Yuvish’s life his parents have imposed on him the ideals of sharing  and helping those in need and through his junior golf travels , he and his father have had many conversations about people who are disadvantaged and the different ways that people can help them.  “I decided that I wanted to do something, but my father told me that I could not play golf and help others at the same time,” explains Yuvish.   Not one to be detracted from his goal, he has managed to find a way where he can continue playing, and still make a difference.

Although Singh did not start the foundation until 2007, he began donating money for his birdies during 2006 when he competed in twelve tournaments with the CJGA and earned $300 for the 15 birdies he recorded. His most successful tournament in 2007 was the CJGA Junior Linkster Tournament at Brookfield Country Club in Cambridge Ont.  where he sunk four birdies and one eagle, donating $130 dollars from that tournament alone. For this upcoming year, Yuvish is scheduled to play in twenty tournaments in Canada and the United States.
Birdies for the Children recently held a charity dinner in late April where he was given an opportunity to address a crowd of supporters in an event that was emceed by ScoreGolf Editor Bob Weeks. “The turnout was really good, there were over fifty people there!” enthuses Yuvish.  The challenge was to match or better Yuvish’s donation amount of $650 dollars to UNICEF Canada. Although there are still unsure of the total amounts raised, Yuvish was very pleased with the success of the event.

UNICEF Canada’s goals are to help provide impoverished children with medicines, vaccines, immunizations, education, clean water and emergency supplies, a vision that Yuvish shares and has made his priority.  “Every child is special and talented, and should use their gifts to help out others in some way,” he says poignantly.”

Kind of like Yuvish Singh.
