It has been quite a hectic time around the CJGA offices over the last month with our international event season in full swing. The amount of time, planning, and overall effort that goes into organizing these events can be quite stressful for the staff here and all should be commended for the long hours that are put in to make them successful.
Speaking of international events, the Stephen Ames Cup wrapped up at Granite Golf Club in Stouffville, Ont. last week as CJGA Team Canada was victorious by a final score of 13 – 7 in the Ryder Cup style tourney. Without question, Stephen Ames is to be commended for his role in this event. Each day he arrived at the golf course before 8 a.m. to cheer on both teams while his financial support included not only the costs of flying in the competitors, but also accommodations, meals, and even activities outside the course that included trips to Niagara Falls and Wonderland.
As organizers, it was a pleasure to be around Stephen all week. He handled all media requests with class and signed countless autographs over the four days. It was obvious how much this event means to him and the interest he takes in supporting young athletes in this country us unmatched among the professionals who play the game for a living.
In its infancy, Stephen wanted a tournament that promoted sportsmanship and goodwill between Canada and Trinidad & Tobago and offered exceptional young golfers an opportunity they otherwise wouldn’t have experienced.
At the end of the week, there were 20 smiling faces on the Canadian and Trinidad sides that was proof enough that the criteria was met. It’s safe to say that Stephen Ames’ priorities are in the right place.
