Kim-Moss Leads at CJGA Nike Golf Junior Championship

Uxbridge, Ont. (August 29, 2007) – Jonathan Kim-Moss, 16, of Mississauga, Ont. fired an opening round 73 (+1) to grab the lead in the Boys 14 – 16 Division at the 3rd annual Nike Golf Junior Championship on Tuesday.  Lightning strikes caused a suspension of the first round for two age divisions as the opening round wrapped up on Thursday morning at Wooden Sticks Golf Club in Uxbridge, Ont.

“I was strong off the tee and putted well today,” said Kim-Moss, who is in search of his first national championship title with the Canadian Junior Golf Association.  “I feel confident coming off my performance at National Pines last week and I’m playing really well right now.”  He leads Sam Holland of New Minas, N.S. by a single stroke and Russell Budd, 16, of Toronto, Ont. by two.

Despite battling an ailing back all day, defending champion Kristopher Kowalchuk, 13, of Burlington, Ont. leads the Boys 13 & Under Division after posting an opening round 78 (+6).  “I really wasn’t concerned about my score today because of my back problems but it turned out I finished well in the end,” admitted Kowalchuk, who eagled the par-5 14th after knocking his approach to 10 feet.  “It is really fun playing this course and experiencing the replica holes.”  He leads Lucas Kim, 13, of Toronto, Ont. and Gajan Sivabalasingham, 13, of Markham, Ont. by three strokes.

Rebecca Lee-Bentham leads the Girls Division after posting an impressive first round 74 (+2).  The Richmond Hill, Ont. resident leads CJGA Team Canada member, Juanita Rico, 17, of Calgary, Alta. by two strokes and Young Soo Kim, 16, of Port Coquitlam, B.C. by nine.

It’s a wide open race in the Boys 17 – 19 Division with six players within five strokes of the lead.  First round leader Sebastian Szirmak, 17, of Toronto, Ont. leads Will Thornburrow, 17, also of Toronto and defending champion Tim Lew, 19, of Courtice, Ont. by a single stroke.

The second round will get underway beginning at 1:50 p.m. on Thursday.  The final round will take place on Friday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
