Murphy Goes Low at Wilson Staff Junior at Timber Ridge
August 10, 2006
Brighton, Ont. - Clear skies and a warm breeze provided an ideal setting for the closing round of the Canadian Junior Golf Association's (CJGA) Wilson Staff Junior at Timber Ridge Golf Club. The event also served as a qualifier for the Teens on the Greens World Championship, which will be held on October 4-8, 2006 in Atlanta, Ga. The low overall winner was Sheamus Murphy, 17, of Tweed, Ont. with a two-day total of 143.
Murphy followed his tournament low first round 70 with a final round 73 on Wednesday to collect his first career CJGA title in the Boys 17 – 19 Division. “I played well, kept the ball in play, hit a lot of fairways and greens,” said Murphy. “That’s my goal when I go out there, so I am pleased with the result.” Jake Katz of Williamsville N.Y. tied Jamie MacDonald, of Lasalette, Ont. for second place in the division with two-day totals of 151.
It was a fight to the finish in the Boys 14-16 Division as Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill, Ont. came out on top in posting a two-day total of 152. “The highlight of the tournament for me was my eagle on the first hole, I am just happy to get my first win on the CJGA tour,” said Taylor. Tyson Louth of Washago, Ont. fired rounds of 77 and 78 to take second in the division while CJGA Team Canada member Stuart Pulkinen, 16, of Toronto, Ont. took third place with a two-day total of 158.
Adam Shaw came from behind to capture his first CJGA Junior Tour victory of his career in the Boys 13 & Under Division. The Richmond Hill resident followed up a first round score of 77, with a final round 73 to hold off hard charging Gajan Sivabalasingham, 12, of Markham, Ont. “I dealt with the pressure of the competition by always telling myself I was down a few strokes,” said the excited Shaw. “Richard (Jung), Gajan and Lucas (Kim) played great today, I am so proud to win.” Sivabalasingham finished second at 152 while Kim grabbed third spot at 155.
Meredith Fairbairn, 14, of Orangeville, Ont. took the Girls crown. She held off Stirling, Ont. resident Hannah Hellyer, 15, and Woodstock, Ont. resident Amy Breakwell, 17, by six strokes. “I had a really good back nine,” said Fairbairn. “I made some very nice putts and my irons kept me in it.”
