Carrigan Dominates Ontario Fall Series at Links of Niagara at Willowdell
September 14, 2006
Port Robinson, Ont. - Despite some wind throughout the weekend, low scores proved to be easy to come by at the Ontario Fall Series event at Links of Niagara at Willowdell, in Port Robinson, Ont. Boys 17-19 Division competitor Alex Carrigan carded the low round of the tournament, posting a 68 on Saturday to help earn his second win of the season. The event was the first of three Ontario Fall Series events, presented by Baka Wireless.
Carrigan, 18, of Guelph, Ont. putted well all weekend, and proved to be the key to victory. “I hit the ball well both days but it was my putting that helped me score well,” he said. Carrigan’s 68 on Saturday gave him enough of a lead heading into the final round to hold off Boys 17-19 Division runner-up Ryan Corbin, 18, of Niagara Falls, Ont., who finished three strokes back despite a two-under par 70 on Sunday. Carrigan finished the tournament at four-under par (68-72-140). Consecutive rounds of 73 for Thornhill, Ontario’s Mark Hoffman, 18, earned him third place.
It was business as usual for Michael Gligic, 16, of Burlington, Ont. as he claimed his third CJGA win in a row and fifth of the season in the Boys 14-16 Division. Gligic fired rounds of 74, 71 (145) to take the division by 11 strokes over his nearest competitor. “I played alright, didn’t make many mistakes,” said Gligic. “I drove the ball better today and didn’t miss the short putts like yesterday.” Fellow Burlington junior, Andrew Shier, 16, finished strongly on Sunday to claim second place (82, 74) while 15-year-old Sterling Emery, of Orangeville, Ont. finished third (80, 79).
In what could be described as a mild upset, Junior Linkster phenom, Shyamal Nagindas, 12, of Aurora, Ont. edged four-time Junior Tour winner and first round leader, 12-year-old Gajan Sivabalasingham, of Markham, Ont. by two strokes to claim his first Boys 13 & Under Division title. “My putting was definitely the strength of my game,” said Nagindas, who carded two straight rounds of 78 (156). “I made a 10-footer on the last hole for the win.” Woodbridge, Ontario’s Javier Diaz, 13, finished just three shots back at 159 (80, 79) to take home third place.
Taylor Schmidt, 15, of Kincardine, Ont. continued her strong play late in the season, as she claimed her second straight CJGA win with an 11 stroke victory over Michelle Lee, 14, of Mississauga, Ont. in the Girls Division. “I hit the ball well and really played two great rounds here,” said Schmidt, who finished with a two-day total of 152 (76, 76). “The course is in great shape.” Jacquelin Stol, 15, of Peterborough, Ont. finished third to earn her fifth straight top-five finish of the season.
The CJGA Ontario Fall Series, presented by Baka Wireless, continues this weekend, September 17-18 at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Georgetown, Ont.
