Lewis Earns First Win of Season at Deer Creek
September 25, 2006
Ajax, Ont. - Despite a threat of rain throughout the weekend, the skies cleared up in time for full field that teed it up on Deer Creek’s south course for the Castle Rock Development Junior Classic in Ajax, Ont. The tournament, the second-to-last event of the Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) Ontario Fall Series, was presented by Baka Wireless.
Playing in his first event as a 17-year-old, Michael Gligic, of Burlington, Ont. continued his stellar play, claiming a Tiger Woods-like fifth consecutive victory. Gligic carded rounds of 68 and 75 (143) on the par-71 layout to take the Boys 17-19 Division by three strokes. “I hit the ball well and putted pretty well yesterday,” said Gligic. “With the wind today, it was tougher to score.” In a tie for second place were Robert McCombe, 17, of Claremont, Ont. and Stittsville, Ont. resident Brady Atchison, both finishing Sunday’s second round with 146 totals.
In the Boys 13 & Under Division, standout Gajan Sivabalasingham, 12, of Markham, Ont. was his dominant self, earning his fifth CJGA win of the year, finishing the tournament at +6 (75, 73). “I didn’t start well today, but I came back on the back nine,” said Sivabalasingham, who has finished in the top-five in all 15 events in which he has played. “I had three straight birdies before a bogey on 18.” In a close battle for second place, Michael Nedoszytko, 12, of Toronto, Ont. edged out Etobicoke, Ont. native, Lucas Kim, 12, by a single stroke. Nedoszytko closed out the event with rounds of 77, 78 (155) while Kim carded rounds of 81, 75 (156).
Arguably the story of the weekend was 16-year-old Adam Lewis, of Whitby, Ont. Lewis opened the tournament with a four-under par 67 on Saturday to take an early lead in the competitive Boys 14-16 Division. Despite struggling somewhat on Sunday, Lewis managed to hold on for his first victory of the year. “I made everything I needed to yesterday,” said Lewis, who finished the two-day tournament at 144 (+2). “My wedge play was great also; I left nothing outside of 15 feet.” Barrett McCarthy, 15, of Oakville, Ont. crept up the standings on Sunday into second place (75, 71), with three golfers finishing in a tie for third.
Also earning her first victory of the year was Jacqueline Yanch, 14, of Barrie, Ont. Yanch carded rounds of 73, 77 (150) to easily win the Girls Division. Yanch defeated Euro Junior Golf Cup teammate Buz Bowerman-Ritchie, 16, of Bowmanville by 13 strokes. Samantha Hall, 16, of Toronto posted her two lowest rounds of the season (86, 84) to earn third place in the flight.
The CJGA Ontario Fall Series concludes next weekend at Caledon Woods Golf Club in Bolton, Ont.
