Calgary, Alta, - The leaderboard at the CJGA Big Chief Beef Jerky Alberta Golf Championship resembled that of any PGA Tour event after the final round wrapped up on Wednesday at Elbow Springs Golf Club in Calgary.
In his first CJGA start of the year, Calgary, Alberta’s Trevor Edwards made the most of it. The former CJGA Team Canada member fired a CJGA season low score of 10-under par in winning the Boys 17 – 19 Division.
Edwards, 19, played near flawless golf in firing a final round 66 (-6) after opening with an almost equally impressive 68 (-4) on Tuesday. After bogeying the second hole on Wednesday, Edwards rattled off seven birdies in posting the number. He made only two bogeys while managing twelve birdies over the two rounds. “I played really well, I hit a lot of fairways and greens,” understated Edwards. After opening with a tournament low 65 (-7), second place finisher Darren Hupfer, 17, of Edmonton, Alta., a CJGA Team Canada member, closed with a 70 (-2) to finish one back of Edwards while Wilson Mitchell, 17, of Calgary, Alta. finished at 136 (-8).
Dustin Zhang, 16, of Calgary held on to win the Boys 14 – 16 Division after closing with an even-par 72 to finish two strokes ahead of Rhys Royer, 16, of Calgary. “I didn’t hit the ball well on the first day, but I putted well and it was a complete reversal today,” said Zhang, who captured his second CJGA title of 2006. “I didn’t think about the other guys, just played my own game.” Rhys Royer, 16, of Calgary turned in a consistent even-par score to take second place honours. Saskatoon native, fourteen year-old Dallas Mengel, fired a one-under 71 to sneak into third place.
CJGA Team Canada member, Wilson Bateman, 12, of Edmonton, cruised to his first Boys 13 & Under title of 2006. Bateman, who fired a first round 75 (+3) made some adjustments heading into the final round and posted an even par 72. “I didn’t think about the competition, I just wanted to play my best,” said Bateman. 10 year-old Matt Williams of Calgary held onto the second slot and fellow Calgary native Aaron Crawford took third place.
14 year-old Nicole Zhang came from behind to win her second Girls Division title of 2006. After a first round 77, Zhang fired a final round 79 to finish two strokes ahead of 15 year-old Calgary native Kelly Amundrud. “I wasn’t strong off the tee either day but the rest of my game was very strong and allowed me to keep my confidence” said Zhang. “In order to succeed at the next level, I need to become stronger out of bunkers and off the tee,” she added. Alex Steffens, 15, of Chestermere fired a final round 89 to slip to third, 7 shots off the pace at 163.
