Playoff Decides Overall Low and Boys 17-19 Division at CPGA Atlantic Junior Championship

August 16 , 2006

New Glasgow, N.S. - Strong winds just off the shores of the Northumberland Strait once again played a huge factor as the final round of the Canadian Junior Golf Association’s (CJGA) Atlantic PGA Junior Championship was completed on Tuesday at Glen Lovat Golf Club in New Glasgow, N.S. The tournament was also the final CJGA Bowden’s Junior Series event of the season.

A playoff for the overall low was the highlight of the day as three juniors competed for the top prize of the event after finishing the tournament at 160. Three playoff holes later, Brian Affleck came out victorious in front of a large crowd of spectators as the top junior at the event as well as the winner of the Boys 17-19 Division.

Affleck, 17, of Thornburn, N.S. went into the day tied for third place in the Boys 17-19 Division, with good friend Shaun Reid, 19, of Ease Side, N.S. and the two golfers battled for 18 holes.  Affleck birdied the last two holes to force a playoff with Reid, after they both finished the round with identical rounds of 75. Affleck was victorious on the second extra hole as Reid found the trees. “I was pretty nervous,” said Affleck. “I play with Shaun everyday, but there were still a lot of nerves.” 19-year-old Alex MacDonald, 19, was tied for the lead after the first day, but dropped to third with 163 total.

Consecutive rounds of 80 for Sean Stuart, 16, earned the Bedford, N.S. native his second CJGA victory of the season. “I played about the same today, and had two holes where I lost balls,” said Stuart, who also claimed the Boys 14-16 Division at Penn Hills in June. “I was consistent, but just have to get rid of those few holes.” After being tied for the lead through 13 holes, James Mills-Holland, 15, of New Minas, N.S. fell to second place where he finished with a two-day total of 163. Twin brother, Sam, fired the low round of the day in the division, a 79, to move up to third place at 164.

Another Bedford native was winner in their division on Tuesday, with 13-year-old Irene Jung claiming her third straight Girls Division title, edging out Kyla McIsaac, 18, of Kentville, N.S. by four shots.  Although Jung was not happy with the way she played on the day, she said that the wind made her shot making even more difficult.

A tough day for first round leader Daniel Ryan, 13, of Antigonish, N.S. opened the door for the rest of the field in the Boys 13 & Under Division. In the end, Ryan held on to the lead, with second and third place only one and two shots back respectively. “I started well on the front, but struggled on the back and lost some balls,” said Ryan. “I was more consistent today, though.” 12-year-old Brett McKinnon, of Glace Bay, N.S. made things interested in Tuesday, and finished in second with Jamie Sweet, 13, of Cole Harbour, N.S. close behind in third.
