August 24, 2006
Morrisburgh, Ont. - The Canadian Junior Golf Association’s (CJGA) Ottawa/Quebec Junior Championship wrapped up under cloudy skies today at the Upper Canada Golf Club in Morrisburgh, Ont. The three-day regional championship hosted a number of top junior golfers including overall low winner, Jesse Maislin, 14, of Montreal, Que.
Maislin finished the tournament with a 223 (+7) total, winning the Boys 14 - 16 Division by 14-strokes. “As long as you stay straight on this course you can have a really great score, and that’s what I did,” said Maislin. Jonny Parker, 15, of Stittsville, Ont. finished in second at 238 – one-stroke ahead of junior Marc-Andre Dandenault, 15, of Bromont, Que.
A final round 75 (+3) was good enough for Sheamus Murphy, 18, of Tweed, Ont. to edge out the competition in the Boys 17-19 Division for his second win of the year. “I was in play all day,” said Murphy. “I was the first time I played three consistent rounds.” Mitchell Vandenhanenberg, 17, of Ottawa, Ont. finished the tournament with a five-over 79 to take second. Vincent Adams of Boisbriand, Que. came in third with a 234 three-day total.
Philippe Morency, 12, of Repentigny, Que. topped the Boys 13 & Under Division posting a 78 (+6) on Wednesday to capture his third division title of the year over Emburn, Que. resident, Eric Martel, 13. “I had some objectives during the tournament and I achieved them,” said Morency. “I putted and chipped well, but I had to work for it.” Third place in the division went to Matthieu Kennis, 12, of Gatineau, Que.
In the Girls Division, 17-year-old Brooke Mallory of Brockville, Ont. fired the low round of the division all three days to earn her first career CJGA win with a 233 (+14) total. “ The first two days I hit the ball and putted well and today my long game was right on,” said Mallory. Victoria Thompson, 19, Akwesasne, Ont. came in third at 242 while Katherine Gravel-Coursol, 12, Mirabel, Que. took third.
