Two In a Row for MacKay at Mazda Junior Series at Lakeridge

August 24, 2006

Whitby, Ont. - More than 70 Ontario junior golfers were treated to clear, sunny skies throughout two days of the Mazda Junior Series at Lakeridge Links Golf Club in Whitby, Ont. A very strong round of 68 (-4) on Wednesday gave Ryan Terdik his first career CJGA victory, as he captured the Boys 14-16 Division.

The 16-year-old Mount Pleasant, Ont. native credited his ball striking, particularly with his irons, as the reason for his success on the day. “I hit the ball really well and that was the difference,” said Terdik. “My irons were the best they’ve ever been. I hit my 4 iron to 2 inches on 14.” Terdik finished the tournament at 146 (+2), tied for the low score of the event. Will Thornburrow, 16, of Toronto, Ont. held the lead after one round, but could not hold on and ended up finishing in second, three shots back at 149 with fellow Toronto golfer Albin Choi, 14, taking home third place.

Russell MacKay, 17, of Bracebridge, Ont. withheld a late charge from defending champion, Alessandro Cappa, 17, of Toronto to claim his second straight CJGA victory in the Boys 17-19 Division.  MacKay’s rounds of 74 and 72 (146) were six better than Cappa, who finished the two-day tournament at 152 (78, 73). “The greens were good, but tough. The undulation and speed combined made it tough,” said MacKay. 17-year-old Brendan Wise, of Stouffville, Ont. finished third with a 156 two-day total.

After beginning the day in a three-way tie for first, Alex Saurette, 13, of Whitby, Ont. ran away from the pack, shooting an 80 on Wednesday to earn the win in his first career CJGA Junior Tour event. “My putting and chipping were my bread and butter,” said Saurette. “I chipped one off the flagstick on 14 today.” Thornhill, Ontario’s Jordan Romano, 13, finished four shots back of the leader in second place with Shea Varty, 13, of Port Perry, Ont. squeaking into third after firing the second lowest round in his division, an 82.

Two consistent rounds of 79 and 83 (162) gave 14-year-old Julia Hodgson, of Unionville, Ont. her first CJGA victory of the season after four previous top-five finishes to start the year. “I played very well; one of my best tournaments this year,” said Hodgson. “My putting and chipping were the strengths of my game.” Local junior, Maya Parsons, 13, finished in second place.

The CJGA Ontario schedule continues on August 31st with the Adams Golf Junior Open at Blue Springs Golf Club in Acton, Ont.
