Lee Dominates Division at Bowden Junior Series at Club de Golf de L’Ile de Montreal

August 10, 2006

Montreal, Que. – Low scores were easier to come by as the winds died down for the second round of the Bowden’s Junior Series at Club de Golf de L’Ile de Montreal, in Montreal, Que.  First round leader in the Boys 17-19 Division, Beon-Yeoung Lee continued his strong play on the second day, finishing the tournament with the low overall score, at 150 to win his division by 13 strokes.

Montreal, Que. resident, Lee, 17, fired the only round of par or better of the tournament on Tuesday, finishing at 70 despite a double-bogey on the 18th hole, to win his first CJGA tournament of his career.  Lee, who finished the two-day event at 151, credits his putting on the back nine for his success.  Fellow Montreal golfer Vincent Cacchione, 19, fired a 74 during the second round to move up to second place at 163 (89, 74) while consecutive rounds of 83 (166) was good enough for 18-year-old Christopher Guarnieri, also of Montreal, to take home third.

Paolo Addona, 12, of Anjou, Que. continued his domination of the CJGA Junior Tour, running away with his fifth consecutive victory of the season.  Addona fired the low round in the Boys 13 & Under Division on Tuesday, a 74, to take the division by 14 strokes.  “My putting was consistent,” said Addona, who played in his first CJGA event since his appearance at the Junior World Championships in San Diego, Calif. In July. “I didn’t miss a putt inside five feet.”

After playing over a hundred holes of competitive golf in the last week, 16-year-old Nathan Callighen, of Stittsville, Ont. fought the fatigue to post a 73 on Tuesday to earn the Boys 14-16 Division title.  Callighen went into the final round in third afcter opening with an 82, but ended up winning by seven strokes.  “I got my touch back around the green,” said Callighen.  “The course was also a lot easier the second time around.”  Despite struggling in the second round, first round leader Olivier Audette Genier, 15, of Candiac, Que. held on for second place at 162 (79, 83) and Yann Gagnon, 16, of Repentigny, Que. edged out a number of golfers for third.

Victoria Thompson, 19, of Akwesasne, Ont. held onto her first round lead, claiming the Girls Division by two strokes with a 177 total (84, 93).  Thompson held off a late charge by second place finisher, 12-year-old Katherine Gravel-Coursol, of Mirabel, Que. to take home her first CJGA victory of the season.  Gravel-Coursol shaved two strokes off the lead on Tuesday, finishing at 179 (88, 91), while Delson, Que. resident Genevieve Guerin, 15, finished third.

The next CJGA Ottawa/Quebec tournament on the schedule is the CJGA Ottawa/Quebec Junior Championship, a three-day event scheduled for August 21st to 23rd at Upper Canada Golf Course in Morrisburgh, Ont..
