Markham, Ont. - CJGA Team Canada East was victorious in three of the four four-ball matches and halved the fourth at the opening round of the Lipton Brisk Canada Cup on Saturday at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, Ont.

“It was a strong start for the eastern team but the tournament is far from over,” said Richard Zokol, CJGA national spokesperson and non-playing captain for CJGA Team Canada West. “Everyone played well today and we’re hoping to put some points on the board in tomorrow’s foursome matches.”

The western side ran into a hot Ryan Putnam who recorded six birdies and an eagle over 15 holes as he and his partner, Aaron Logan of Oakland, Ont., dispatched Nicholas Gagne, of Richmond, B.C. and Andrew Zaba of Deer Valley, Sask. 4 & 3 in the Boys 17 - 19 Division. After dropping two of the first three holes, Putnam and Logan stormed back, winning holes 6, 7, and 8 to open a lead they would not relinquish.

Buz Bowerman-Ritchie of Bowmanville, Ont. and Augusta James of Shelburne, Ont. turned in a solid performance on Saturday, defeating Kelsey Klatt of Fort Qu’Appelle, Sask. and Crystal Weiss of Regina, Sask. 7 & 5 in the Girls Division matchup. For Bowerman-Ritchie, it is her second consecutive appearance at the Lipton Brisk Canada Cup.

Courtland, Ontario’s Brett Cairns drained a clutch birdie putt on 18 to halve the Boys 14 – 16 Division match in what was perhaps the match of the day. Cairns paired with Will Thornburrow of Toronto, Ont. while the western side was represented by Burke Wiebe of Winnipeg, Man. and Bret Schneider of Regina, Sask.

Richard Jung of North York, Ont. and Lucas Kim, of Etobicoke, Ont. capitalized on a few costly errors by Kevin Kwon and Andy Yang, both of Coquitlam, B.C. on the back nine in winning their match 3 & 2.

The tournament, now in its fourth year, is the only one of its kind in Canada, pitting a team of eight junior golfers from the east against eight from the west. The Ryder Cup style event will be held on the North Course, site of the 2007 Canadian Open, beginning Friday, August 25th through August 27th.

The teams will compete in four-ball, foursomes, and singles matches over the three days to determine a winner. Former PGA Tour Professional and current CJGA National Spokesperson, Richard Zokol, will be on hand for all three days of the event. CJGA Team Canada West has captured the past two Canada Cup titles to hold an overall series lead of 2 – 1.

Tee-times for the second round foursome matches will run from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. on the North Course at Angus Glen.
