Markham, Ont. - It was a spirited final round of singles matches at the fourth annual Lipton Brisk Canada Cup on Monday as CJGA Team Canada East closed out their western counterparts by a final score of 11 - 5, capturing 4 ½ of the 8 points on the final day.
“It was a spirited competition and a great experience for all the junior golfers competing,” said Earl Fritz, CJGA executive director and non-playing captain of CJGA Team Canada East. “All competitors played great this week.”
PGA Tour veteran and CJGA national spokesperson, Richard Zokol, agreed. “This is a unique format and playing an event like this will go a long way in preparing Canada’s next generation both mentally and physically,” he said.
CJGA Team Canada East’s singles points came from Buz Bowerman-Ritchie of Bowmanville, Ont., Augusta James of Shelburne, Ont., Will Thornburrow of Toronto, Ont., Brett Cairns of Courtland, Ont., and a half point from Ryan Putnam of Georgetown, Ont. Putnam birdied three of his final four holes to come back from a four-hole deficit against Richmond, British Columbia’s Nicholas Gagne and halve his match.
CJGA Team Canada West’s points came from Coquitlam, B.C’s Andy Yang and Kevin Kwon, Andrew Zaba of Deer Valley, Sask., as well as the half point from Gagne.
The win for CJGA Team Canada East brings the overall series to 2 - 2 as CJGA Team Canada West was victorious in the past two Lipton Brisk Canada Cups.
