Michael Bosch and Julia Hodgson Named CJGA Mizuno All-Canadians
Markham, Ont. (September 26, 2007) – Each year the Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) and Mizuno Canada recognize two outstanding young golfers as recipients of the Mizuno All-Canadian Award. The distinction is granted to one male and one female junior golfer who show exemplary athletic, academic, and community achievements. Michael Bosch of Calgary, Alta. and Julia Hodgson of Unionville, Ont. have earned Mizuno-All Canadian status for 2007.
Said John Stacey, President of Mizuno Canada: “Mizuno is excited to honour Michael and Julia on their outstanding achievements in 2007. With the numerous applications received for this award the choice is always difficult but these two juniors epitomize what the Mizuno All-Canadian Award stands for - sportsmanship, contributing to society and academics. We encourage Michael and Julia to embrace this award, be proud of this accomplishment and remain humble enough to encourage those who follow them.”
“Mizuno created the All-Canadian Award with the CJGA in 2002. Ten prior members have received this award and in this sixth year, we congratulate Michael and Julia and welcome them to this elite group.”
Said Earl Fritz, the Executive Director of the CJGA: “Both Michael and Julia have proven to be outstanding young adults both on the golf course and off of it. With the continued support of organizations such as Mizuno Canada, we are able to deservedly recognize the efforts of these young athletes.”
Bosch, 18, is no stranger to high-level competition having earned his way onto CJGA Team Canada at the 2006 and 2007 Stephen Ames Cup. This past August he was named the playing captain of CJGA Team Canada at the Ames Cup, as the Canadian side was victorious for the second time in three years. Bosch continued his winning ways as a member of CJGA Team Canada at the Euro Junior Golf Cup in Scotland this past July as the Canadian side won the event for the second consecutive year.
“This award means a lot to me,” acknowledged Bosch, who first began playing golf with his father at the tender age of 2, the individual who he recognizes as having the most significant influence on his golfing career. “To be recognized for all different aspects of your life means a great deal.”
Outside of golf, Bosch is an honour roll student at the Edge School in Calgary as he completed the 06/07 academic year with an 88.9% average while he has donated well over 100 hours of his time at Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary within its Regional Voice Program.
“I want to continue to push myself to be one of the top amateur golfers in Alberta,” he said. “Mizuno’s support of junior golf through this award is really amazing and I greatly appreciate it.”
You would be hard pressed to find a junior golfer who has put in as much time and effort as 15 year-old Julia Hodgson. In a little over one year, the Unionville resident has shaved an incredible 27 strokes of her handicap, bringing it from 30 to 3. “Lots of hard work and dedication for sure,” she said. “I’m motivated to work hard and when you have that motivation and drive, success is a result.”
Hodgson joined Bosch as a member of the Stephen Ames Cup team this past August where she compiled a very impressive 3 – 0 record. On the CJGA Junior Tour, she captured her first career victory in early June at an event held at Horseshoe Valley Resort in Barrie, Ont.
“It’s awesome to be recognized outside of golf for academics and community involvement,” admits Hodgson. “Winning this award is such an honour.”
Surprisingly enough, it was the persistence of her father who fostered Hodgson’s love for the game as her first introduction to the sport only three years ago was met with resistance. “I didn’t like it at first,” she acknowledged. “When I started getting good, it really became my passion.” She recognized the efforts of her two coaches, Henry Brunton and Rhonda Fleury as the two individuals who have impacted her golf game the most.
On a community level she has donated her time to various organizations including her elementary school, a breast cancer fundraiser, and as a golf camp counselor.
Academically, Hodgson is an honour roll student at Markham District High School with a GPA of 4.3. She will write the SAT in November as she prepares for her next step to the U.S. collegiate ranks where she has already drawn interest. “Definitely to a warmer climate,” she says.
Congratulations to the 2007 Mizuno All-Canadian Award winners, Michael Bosch and Julia Hodgson.
The award will be presented to the winners during a ceremony following the first round of the CJGA Fall Series at Caledon Woods in Caledon, Ont. on Saturday, September 29th at approximately 6:00 p.m.
