Team East Up Three at the Lipton Brisk Canada Cup
Oakville, Ont. (August 1, 2007) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) conducted the first round of the 4th annual Lipton Brisk Canada Cup today at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont. Team East asserted themselves early in collecting 3 ½ out of a possible four points on Wednesday’s fourball matches.
Team East and Team West each have eight members, two from each category - Boys 13 and Under, Boys 14-16, Boys 17-19 and Girls. These juniors qualified for the event through a series of Lipton Brisk Canada Cup qualifiers held across the country earlier this season on the national CJGA schedule.
Strong competition came from both teams in the Boys 13 & Under Division as the match went the full 18 holes before Team East won 2 Up. Despite opening up an early two hole lead, Team West members Brenden Setter, 13, of Selkirk, Ont., and Tyler Puetz, 13, of Melfort, Sask. could not hold on as Team East members Cole Sadlier, 13, of Norwood, Ont., and Lucas Greco, 13, of Montreal, Que., fought back to win two up after 18 holes. “Our gameplan was for Cole to attack the pins while I played it safe,” said Greco. “We both had some great shots and stuck approach shots close to the pin.”
The Girls Division match also went the full 18 holes. Both teams each experienced a one-hole lead over the course of the match, and it was Team East members Hailey Ingleson, 16, of Oakville, Ont., and Meredith Fairbairn, 15, of Orangeville, Ont., who were up one approaching 17th tee. “We were working very well as a team today,” explained Ingleson. “We were able to co-ordinate our shots and we both putted well.” However, Team West member Cecelia Jeon, 15, of Calgary, Alta., birdied the hole to force the match to the 18th hole which was halved. “Our strategy worked out there and we helped each other read the course,” said Jeon. “Tomorrow we are going to play smart and not take risks unless we are forced to.”
A hole in one from Team East member Braeden Cryderman, 17, of Huntsville, Ont. was the highlight of the second Team East point on Wednesday as he and his parner, Brennan Doyle, 17, of Sudbury, Ont. were victorious 2 Up in the Boys 17 – 19 flight ahead of Team West members Mark Diakiw, 17, of Saskatoon, Sask., and Thomas Weikle, 18, of Cutknife, Sask. “We hit some awesome shots, like the hole-in-one I had on the 12th hole,” said Cryderman. “We are confident heading into tomorrow and our plan is to keep it in the fairway.”
Team East members Austin Kelly, 16, of Chatham, Ont., and Chad Nicholson, 16, of Port Carling, Ont., came out victorious in the Boys 14-16 Division, earning Team East the third point over Team West in round one. Team West members Jordan Beveridge, 14, of Pitt Meadows, B.C., and Christian Pomerleau, 15, of Kelowna, B.C., put up a good fight on the front nine, but ended up losing 4 & 3. “We played it shot by shot and our iron play was accurate,” said Nicholson. “We had a blast today, and hope for a repeat performance in the second round.”
Team East enters day two with a three point lead over Team West. But with two more days of competition remaining, it is still anyone’s tournament. The second round will be played between the same foursomes, however it will be alternate shot format. Teams will begin teeing off at 7:30am tomorrow. As always, spectators are welcome to attend.
