CJGA Alumni Enjoy Successful Fall Collegiate Season

Markham, Ont. (December 5, 2007) – The college golf season has completed its fall schedule and several CJGA alumni have performed extremely well against some of the world’s top amateur golfers.

hayDrury University’s Thomas Hay (pictured left) and Andrew Funk are both enjoying very successful freshman seasons after both compiled impressive junior golf resumes.  Hay is a former CJGA Team Canada member from Langley, B.C. while Funk, from Edmonton, Alta. is a two-time Mizuno CJGA National Golf Championship winner.

With a scoring average of 73.11, Hay sits 6th in the conference and has already collected his first collegiate win at the Riverman Invitational in St. Louis in early October where he posted a three-day total of 207 (-9) to earn medallist honours.  Funk is 9th in the conference at 74.11.

Oregon State’s James Allenby, also from Langley, is building upon a junior year in which he was named to the All-Pacific Region Squad and earned All-Pac 10 honourable mention status.  With three top-five finishes in five fall events including a victory at the Opus NW Husky Invitational in October, he should continue to draw accolades as he is currently the top ranked Canadian golfer in NCAA Division I golf at 14th spot according to Golfweek magazine’s rankings as of November 22nd.

Langley’s Adam Cornelson is another freshman that has made an impact in his first year at the University of New Orleans.  A former CJGA Team Canada member, Cornelson recorded two top-20 finishes and boasts an impressive stroke average of 72.88 – good enough for second on the team.

The Canadian female contingent in the NCAA ranks is also doing quite well led by former CJGA Mizuno All-Canadian, Kira Meixner, who is in her senior year at Kent State University.  Meixner parlayed a strong summer season into a lightning quick start to the fall season as she finished 2nd at the Mary Fossum Invitational in September and followed it up with a victory at the Lady Northern Invitational – her third collegiate win.  Another CJGA alumnus, Kirby Dreher of Fort St. John, B.C., is only six spots behind her teammate, Meixner, in the Golfweek rankings (44th) after a fall season that included four top-ten finishes and a scoring average of 73.40.

Former CJGA multiple tournament winner Lisa Maunu of St. Thomas, Ont. had a breakout fall season at the University of Notre Dame.  Now in her junior year, Maunu captured medallist honours at the Cougar Classic in September that included a school record round of 66 (-6).  In the team’s remaining four tournaments, she finished no lower than 23rd and posted two additional top-ten finishes.  She is currently 55th in the Golfweek rankings.

Fresh off her appearance as a member of CJGA Team Canada at the 2007 Stephen Ames Cup, Port Moody, B.C. resident Kristina Gargaro (pictured left) appears to have made a smooth transition to collegiate golf as she was named Big Sky Conference Golfer of the Week for the week ending October 31st.  She was Eastern Washington’s best player for the final two fall season tournaments including a 31st place finish at the prestigious Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in October.
