C.J. Kim Completes Improbable Comeback at CJGA Desert Classic

Tucson, Ariz. (December 28, 2007) – With nine holes to play, Chandler, Arizona’s C.J. Kim trailed by five strokes to second round leader Matt Hamilton of West Vancouver, B.C. but he would not be denied his first CJGA win in the Boys 14 – 16 Division.

Kim, 16, played his final nine holes in two-under par in overtaking Hamilton who managed a 77 (+4) today.  Kim posted a three day total of 215 (-1) to defeat Hamilton by a single stroke.  “I putted well today,” said Kim, who birdied the final hole to seal the victory.  “I just focused on my game today and didn’t care about the other players.”  Third place in the division went to Ben Esparza, 16, of Tucson.

Scottsdale, Arizona’s Blake Brown continued his strong play in claiming the overall title and the Boys 17 – 19 Division with a three-day total of 213 (-3).  “I didn’t hit the ball as well today but I got it around the course,” said Brown, who will attend Boise State University next year.  “It was a great tournament.  Scott Patterson of Thousand Oaks, Calif. finished second in the division while CJGA Team Canada member Alex Dumais, 17, of Caledon East, Ont. moved up to third.

Mike McGilton, 12, of Chandler, Ariz. led from wire to wire in earning his first career CJGA victory after closing with a 78 (+5) on Sunday.  “We all had fun out there,” said McGilton, of his playing partners.  “I hit my driver really well this week.  It’s a pretty big win for me.”  Jack Doty, 11, of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. held on to second place in the division while Ty Hack, 13, of Corona Del Mar, Calif. finished third.
