East Brings Home Lipton Brisk Canada Cup Once Again

TORONTO, ONT. (August 1, 2008) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) hosted the third and final day of the 6th Annual Lipton Brisk Canada Cup at The Donalda Club in Don Mills, Ont. where Team East and Team West battled down to the wire in hopes of bringing home the cup.  After the first two days of the tournament, Team East was leading by 3 points heading into the final day play.  Team West made an immense comeback in the singles matches, gaining 5.5 points of the available 8, to tie up the tournament.  Based on Ryder Cup rules the winning team from the previous year will retain the cup, crowning Team East repeat champions.

Some of the highlighted matches were between Team West player, Jocelyn Alford of Calgary Alta. overcame her competitor from Team East, Brittany Davidson of Mississauga, Ont. with a final score of 5-3.  Another Team West member who played exceedingly well was Edson, Alta. resident, Demetres Gianntsos who beat Ryan Weatherall of Nepean, Ont. with a final score of 5-4. Both of the Boys 17-19 Division matches ended in favour of Team West with final scores of 4-3.

Nicholas Crozier of Unionville, Ont. was clutch for Team East, defeating Mack Burns of Regina, Sask. with a final score of 5-4 and Kiersten Klekner-Alt of Ottawa, Ont. beat Evann Parker of Calgary, Alta. 1 up on the 18th hole to secure the points needed to win the Lipton Brisk Canada Cup.

It was nice to see the team play well today,” Canadian Tour Professional Stuart Anderson , who coached Team West throughout the tournament, “Last night before the third day of play, we had a chat and I told them to believe in themselves and obviously they did, because they went out today and played superb.”

“It is a difficult feeling being coach, I was more nervous this week then I would have had i been playing,” Anderson admitted, “I hope that the kids are able to take away the importance of learning that they can only control what they themselves do, so if they just believe in themselves and don’t let external factors affect their play.”
