Day 1 Results
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Calgary, AB (August 19, 2009) – “I am overjoyed with the results,” stated Chris Harries, manager of the Trinidad & Tobago team. That was a common feeling among all of the members of the visiting team as the Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) conducted the first round of the 5th annual Stephen Ames Cup, presented by RBC at Canyon Meadows Golf & Country Club. The two sides competed in fourball matches, with five matches taking place and a total of five points available. The determined side from Trinidad & Tobago emerged with the lead after capturing four out of the available five points.
“It is a little bit of a surprise,” commented tournament host Stephen Ames. “But the kids played great. I think it is the first time that the Trinidad &Tobago team has lead after the first round while on Canadian soil. I think this might indicate a change in the pattern of the home team always winning.”
The day got underway with the Boys 15 & Under Division where Jake Delaney (Maraval, Trinidad) and Jessel Mohammed (San Fernando, Trinidad) lead 5 UP after the front nine. The Canadian side of Matt Williams (Calgary, AB) and Jesse Teron (Red Deer, AB) battled back on the back nine before falling 3 & 2.
In the Girls 21 & Under Division, Martine de Gannes (Diego Martin, Trinidad) and Kelsey Lou Hing (Maraval, Trinidad) entered the 18th hole leading 1 UP, but Canadians Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hill) and Kiersten Klekner-Alt (Ottawa, ON) excelled under the pressure, birdying the final hole to earn half a point.
The Canadian side led throughout their match in the Boys 18 & Under Division as Matt Victoruk (Winnipeg, MB) and Eric Locke (Digby, NS) managed to earn a 3 UP lead through 10 holes, supporting each other during the round. The Trinidad & Tobago side was not to be outdone however as James Drew (Port of Spain, Trinidad) eagled the 15th hole and birdied the 16th hole to return the match to all square. “I really enjoyed playing in an international event,” said Locke, “I really got along well with my playing partners, they were good guys.”
The Boys 21 & Under Division concluded on the 17th hole with Trinidad & Tobago grabbing the final point with a 2&1 victory. Jordan Stephens (Arima, Trinidad) and Talin Rajendranath (San Fernando, Trinidad) played solid golf all day long and did not allow the Canadian side of Michael Ayotte (Whitby, Ont.) and Alex Dumais (East Caledon, Ont.) to get a chance of collecting any points.
