Trinidad & Tobago Takes Stranglehold at Stephen Ames Cup
Calgary, AB (August 20, 2009) – Today was a day of heartbreak on eighteen green at the 5th Annual Stephen Ames Cup at Canyon Meadows Golf & Country Club. Four of the five matches went the distance between CJGA Team Canada and Trinidad & Tobago of which three were taken by the Trinidad squad. The two sides competed in foursome matches today with five matches taking place and a total of five points available. After taking a 4 to 1 first round lead, CJGA team Canada came out with high hopes of narrowing the deficit.
"Foursomes is the most difficult format of the three days,” admitted tournament host Stephen Ames, “but I thought all the kids really handled playing as a team well. I'm impressed by the play of team Trinidad & Tobago, it's the first time in the history of the Stephen Ames Cup that the foreign team was leading heading into the final day."
The Boys 18 & Under Division got the day started as Matt Victoruk (Winnipeg, MB) and Eric Locke (Digby, NS) competed against the Trinidad & Tobago side of James Drew (Port of Spain, Trinidad) and Andrei Collins (Couva, Trinidad). The match set the stage for the day as they completed 17 holes all square. Drew and Collins stepped up under the pressure, birding the final hole to take the match 1 UP and earning the first point of the day for Trinidad.
Jisoo Keel (Coquitlam, BC) and Jamie Oleskiew (Surrey, BC) represented CJGA Team Canada in the Girls 18 & Under Division and after 17 holes of play found themselves all square with Trinidad & Tobago’s Natalya Rahamatula (Bel Air, Trinidad) and Monifa Sealy (Glencoe, Trinidad). “Alternate shot takes you out of your own game,” commented Sealy. “It involves a lot of teamwork.” It was this teamwork that provided the Team Trinidad & Tobago the advantage and their second 1UP victory on eighteen after a putting in for par.
The Boys 21 & Under Division finally provided CJGA Team Canada with their first full point of the Stephen Ames Cup. Jordan Stephens (Arima, Trinidad) and Talin Rajendranath (San Fernando, Trinidad) provided a great challenge, but could not stop the Canadian side of Michael Ayotte (Whitby, Ont.) and Alex Dumais (East Caledon, Ont.) who earned the win 3&2.
The Trinidad & Tobago side in the Boys 15 & Under Division of Jake Delaney (Maraval, Trinidad) and Jessel Mohammed (San Fernando, Trinidad) put together another great front nine in the foursome format to earn a 3UP lead on Matt Williams (Calgary, AB) and Jesse Teron (Red Deer, AB) through eight holes. Not to be outdone, the Canadian squad battled back to square the match heading to 17 tee. The Alberta native’s had the opportunity to take a 1 UP lead heading to the final hole however were unable to capitalize, three putting the green after a great chip shot. On the 18th green the Trinidad & Tobago squad had an opportunity to win the match by two putting, but with all eyes on the green and the pressure of international competition, they too were unable to capitalize, leaving the match all square.
Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hill, ON) and Kiersten Klekner-Alt (Ottawa, ON) managed to take Martine de Gannes (Diego Martin, Trinidad) and Kelsey Lou Hing (Maraval, Trinidad) to the eighteenth hole for the second day in a row. Today it would de Gannes and Lou Hing who succeeded following their countrymen to a 1UP win.
Tomorrow will be the final round of competition with a total of 10 points available in singles matches. A team has won the Stephen Ames Cup once they have won 10.5 points.
