Canada’s Charge Falls Short at Stephen Ames Cup

Calgary, AB (August 21, 2009) – “It was a great feat for the underdogs,” stated tournament host Stephen Ames, “Trinidad and Tobago was able to become the first team to win the Stephen Ames Cup on foreign soil.”  The Canadian Junior Golf Association’s (CJGA) Team Canada did not make it easy for Trinidad & Tobago as they made a charge in the ten single matches that took place today. With a full ten points available, it was no guarantee the visitors would secure the trophy for the second straight year.

Canada did not lose one of the first seven matches of the day. Jesse Teron (Red Deer, AB), Alex Dumais (Caledon East, ON), Matthew Victoruk (Winnipeg, MB), and Eric Locke (Digby, NS) all managed to earn a full point for their side. Matt Williams (Calgary, AB), Michael Ayotte (Whitby, ON), and Jamie Oleksiew (Surrey, BC) managed to battle their way to half a point. Heading into the eighth match, Canada had closed the tournament total to 9 – 8 in favour of Trinidad & Tobago.

Trinidad & Tobago’s Monifa Sealy (Glencoe, Trinidad) played a spectacular round of golf in the eighth match to earn the first full point for Trinidad & Tobago in a 6&5 victory over Jisoo Keel (Coquitlam, BC), while Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hill, ON) kept Canada’s hope alive winning 1UP on the eighteenth hole in a superb finish over Kelsey Lou Hing (Miraval, Trinidad)

In the end, five-time Stephen Ames Cup veteran, Martine de Gannes (Diego Martin, Trinidad) would stay steady and clinch the final point to secure the first victory on foreign soil, winning her match 4&3.

“The competition was strong out there today,” commented Ames.  “It was great to see both sides competing hard and battling.” Canadian Eric Locke showed just how good you have to be to compete. “He [Locke] was close to five under through six,” said playing opponent James Drew (Port of Spain, Trinidad), “I just kept making pars and he kept making birdie or better.” Locke wasn’t alone; Monifa Sealy (Glencoe, Trinidad) was at the top of her game as she made eagle from 107 yards on the par-4, 6th hole. Martine de Gannes made two eagles during her round today, chipping in on the par-5, 1st hole and the par-5, 15th hole.

“I’m proud of today’s result,” said Non-playing Captain of CJGA Team Canada, John Lawrence. “The team continued to fight to the very end, it has just been a great week.”
